The Penn State Alumni Association will be handing out an Honorary Alumni Award to Cael Sanderson for his constructive role within the university. Sanderson is among one of five recipients to receive the award this year.
The award is in its 47th year of existence and is given to people who did not graduate from Penn State, but have devoted their work in bettering the school. Sanderson is coming off his tenth year at the helm of the Nittany Lion wrestling program and has turned it into a dynasty.
Under the tutelage of Sanderson, the Nittany Lions have won eight NCAA titles and six Big Ten titles, while producing 23 individual national champions and 35 All-Americans. He was unbeaten as a college wrestler at his alma mater, Iowa State, where he coached before departing for State College.
The other winners include C. Max Lang, Brook Lenfest, Rachel Levine and Albert Matyasovsky.
Sanderson will be presented the award later this year.
