Wrestling, Kent State, Taylor

2018 World Champion and Penn State Wrestling Alumi David Taylor makes an appearance during the wrestling match against Kent State at Rec Hall on Sunday Nov. 11, 2018. No 1 Penn State defeats no. 24 Kent State 52-3.

As former Penn State wrestlers Bo Nickal and Zain Retherford vie to make the United States World Team at the upcoming Final X: Rutgers event, they'll be doing so without a fellow former Nittany Lion — David Taylor.

Taylor, the reigning 86 kg world champion, announced via Twitter that he was pulling out of this year's Final X event after not being fully recovered from an injury sustained during this year's Beat the Streets charity event on May 6.

In the letter, Taylor confirms he had knee surgery and that his focus is now squarely on the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

With Taylor's withdrawal from Final X, that means former Iowa State All-American Pat Downey III will likely be the United States' representative at the 2019 World Wrestling Championships in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan.
