Save Vs. Splurge: cold-weather knits for any wallet size

For many, the word "sweater" conjures up images of pom-pom-riddled creations, often found on out-of-touch grandmothers. However, a good sweater will certainly prove its worth in the coming winter months. As a way to combat the cold without rocking the knitted-snowflake look, try one of these on.

For the Girls

Cardigan sweaters are not just in, they're everywhere. To stick out from the crowd, try the Cable Sweater Cardigan from Forever 21 ($34.80 on Forever21.com). Set in a sharp blue with a cable-knit design, the sweater sticks out from the army of cardigans that has cropped up as of late.

Splurge

Though the Ruffle-Hem Cardigan by Express is a little pricier ($59.50 on Express.com), its functionality makes up the difference. Transitioning from classroom to extra-curricular is simple, as the piece layers well with pretty much anything.

For the Guys

Hoodies often take a little bit of coordinating in order to be fashionable. For the Double-Texture Hoodie by Express ($69.50 on Express.com) this is not the case.

The rib texturing lends a feeling more like a sweater than a hoodie, making it more formal but simple enough for everyday wear.

Splurge

For guys, just as much as girls, the cardigan trend is everywhere.

Designs often take a middle-of-the-road stance, not ascribing its style to one gender or the other. With the Full-Zip Cardigan Sweater by Martin & Osa ($89.50 on Martinandosa.com) this is not the case.

The concept of a man's cardigan sweater finds its poster child here, with a ribbed design that gives the sweater a sharp-streamlined look and a two-way zipper that gives it more of an edge.
