Women to bring humor to feminine problem

Starting Tuesday, July 28, State College will be experiencing Menopause.

The State Theatre, in cooperation with Pennsylvania Centre Stage, will premier the popular Broadway show Menopause The Musical from July 28 through Aug. 2. This is the first time the show has come to State College.

The show, which began touring in 2001, follows four women who find themselves going through the same changes in the latter part of their lives.

They meet by chance in a department store at a lingerie sale.

In a more lighthearted manner, the show pokes fun at common symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes, wrinkles, and chocolate binges.

Kristy Cyone, marketing director for the State Theatre, said the show is supposed to be "absolutely hysterical" and she had been getting many requests to bring the show to State College. She said menopause is a time in every woman's life that is really easy to turn into a joke.

"[The show] has gotten fantastic reviews, and it was one of those things we wanted to do," Cyone said.

The performance will have multiple showings daily, a rarity for the State Theatre.

Cyone said the theater, 130 W. College Ave., has not experienced a show with multiple daily performances before, but she isn't worried about it and expects the show to satisfy its audience.

While the main target audience is women, Cyone said she thinks men of all ages will enjoy it, as well, because they witness these changes in their wives, mothers and other female family members.

For the men who still worry about the show, Cyone offers some comfort.

"Don't worry. The bar will be open," she said. "It's something you can sit back and chuckle at."

The popularity is evident because the July 30 matinee has already sold out and the matinees on Aug. 1 and Aug. 2 have only a few tickets available. Cyone expects a "fantastic turnout" and said she thinks all the tickets will sell out, having the audience total being around 4,400 over the four day span of the show, as of press time.

She said she suggests any interested parties should buy tickets now because they are going fast.

Executive Director for the State Theatre Mike Negra said tickets went on sale in December and were open to the general public in February.

Menopause The Musical has a traveling cast that rotates through its performers.

Cyone said rehearsals for the State College showings begin the Sunday prior to the show's premiere at the State Theatre. Because the cast and crew have done the show multiple times before, this is just to get used to the variables of the State Theatre.

The entire production, including the cast, only comprises about nine people, Negra said. Cyone and Negra both said this is a simple production because it is pretty easy to put together for the theater.

Negra said he expects it to be a night of fun.

"It's not a serious drama and should be a fun, great summertime night escape," he said.

Tickets can be purchased online, www.statetickets.com, by phone at (814) 272-0606 and from 11 a.m.- 8 p.m. Monday through Friday at the State Theatre.
