Student author publishes book

Luke Fetkovich has a lot to say about the world, and he's only written 505 pages of it.

The student author said he "wants the reader to come away ... seeing the world in a different way that they hadn't before they read it."

Fetkovich's (sophomore-film and video) first published book, Zero Hour: The Revelation, is a fictional novel that has elements of fantasy, mystery, suspense and action, and it was written to appeal to real, normal people, Fetkovich said.

Without the help of an editor, Fetkovich said he self-published his first novel through an online service, Booklocker.com. The site describes itself as a print-on-demand and ebook publishing services company.

What began as an idea in high school has become the first piece of a six-part series Fetkovich called "not an average fantasy story."

Though he didn't exactly plan for the project to become such a large series, he said "it sort of took off after I started writing that first chapter."

The plot centers on several characters who are high school seniors living in Pennsylvania in modern day. These students begin to make discoveries about another magical world they were sure didn't exist.

"They also find out that there's something sinister brewing that is really powerful and destructive," Fetkovich said.

It turns out the characters need to save the world from this "Armageddon."

Fetkovich added in his writing he is "all about the extreme stuff."

Really, he said, the story deals with questions about what's right and wrong because he wants to make the reader think.

Right now, he said his focus is on marketing and getting the word out about the book, and he wants to see if people enjoy his novel before he writes five more to complete the series.

"I want to make sure it's actually worth it to spend half my life writing a huge novel," he said.

Some marketing strategies he's employing are handing out business cards and bookmarks and directing people to the Facebook group and the Web site www.zerohourbooks.com, where the book is available for purchase.

Also, as an enticement, Fetkovich said he posted the first four chapters as a free excerpt on the Web site for readers who may be hesitant about buying the book.

Because he's a student, he said writing the book was "mentally draining" because of time commitments such as class and other activities.

He would set aside blocks of time just for writing when there were no other distractions.

"It's more about time management than anything else," he said.

However, Fetkovich's advice for fellow writers is to not get discouraged and to have strong perseverance.

"If you keep working at it ... you're going to eventually get there," he said.
