Local stores offer variety in football-themed clothing

With a home game this weekend, it's time to head downtown and stock up on the newest football fashions. Penn State football has come a long way in past years, and so has the football gear for both men and women.

Downtown

"Paws and Polka dots are the latest craze," said Michelle Lindo who works as a clerk at the Student Book Store, 330 E. College Ave. Lindo said these new prints can be found around the store on tees, sweatshirts and hats.

The Family Clothesline, 352 E. College Ave., also has a selection of new logos and prints to supply students and fans with the athletic fashions they crave.

"I guess the in thing right now is the shiny urban look," said Tracy Bell, store coordinator.

With catchy T-shirt logos stating "TGIFS -- Thank Goodness it's football season" -- and new "Happy Valley" shirts with metallic logos, it would be hard for any spectator to be out of place during game day.

"We always try to take old prints off and put new prints on," said Bell, saying the store's embedded logo is its hot new seller.

"We need more for the next game because [the embedded logo] is flying off the shelves," Bell said.

She added though this and many new hot prints may sell out before a big game, the turnaround time on new items at the Family Clothesline is only two days.

"We print ourselves, so if we're out of something on Thursday, we can print 10,000 more on Friday," Bell said.

Even with a great selection of new products, everything at The Family Clothesline still runs cheaper than many other stores selling Penn State merchandise, Bell said.

"We have been here since 1985 and our T-shirt price has only been upped $2. We try to keep our prices low," Bell said.

Another store downtown devoted to selling merchandise at more student-oriented prices is The Clothesline Factory Outlet, 138 E. College Ave.

"Our jerseys are $40 compared to $60 [at other stores] so we hope more people will stop in once they realize how much better our prices are than everyone else's," said Ashley Maelhorn, an employee at The Clothesline.

Aside from jerseys, Maelhorn said The Clothesline's most popular sellers are hooded sweatshirts starting at $19.99, and T-shirts starting at $6.99.

"We will have a ton of white sweatshirts and tees for the White Out game," Maelhorn said.

On Campus

The Penn State Bookstore in the HUB-Robeson Center is another place to go for football gear on campus. With countless brands to choose from, including Columbia and Nike, it would be hard not find something in the bookstore to show off your lion pride.

"Nike Sideline products always do well for us in the store and with alumni purchasing online," Rebecca Brouwer, assistant store manager, said of the line of jerseys that are the same as those worn by the coaches.

Another new and popular item in the store are the new 40 Winks Gear Collection, which includes pajama shirts, boxers and capri pants in pastel pinks and greens, Brouwer said.

Off Campus

The perfect Penn State football T-shirts, zip-ups, sweatpants, tote bags, pillows and blankets can be found at an unexpected off-campus outlet. The arrival of the new PINK Collegiate Collection at Victoria's Secret stores -- including the Nittany Mall store location -- has created quite a buzz.

"We barely have anything left because students have been buying," Liz Yeager (sophomore-hotel and restaurant management), a Victoria's Secret employee, said. Though the prices of the Collegiate Collection are higher than standard PINK products, Yeager said not many students visiting the mall are passing up on the latest fitted Penn State football merchandise.
