Save vs. splurge

While some may only associate scarves with being bulky or woolly; and keeping the neck warm in cold weather, it's time to think again.

With a continued insurgence of lightweight material scarves, the neck-adorning trend seems like it's here to stay. Whether it's a designer name or a look-alike, here are different fabric scarves on which you can either save or splurge for the upcoming fall season.

Cashmere Pashmina

Made of a light, decadent fabric, these scarves are soft enough to accessorize with in the morning and then double as a pillow for an afternoon nap in the HUB-Robeson Center.

Splurge: The Prada Cashmere Pashmina scarf in Beige ($275.00 at designersimports.com) is an example of this supple fabric in a neutral color that would complement any skin tone. Splurging on a neutral over a bright color is also sensible because it matches more outfits.

Save: The pure Italian Cashmere scarf ($128.00 at jcrew.com) isn't a high-end label, but it's still cashmere. With the lower price tag, it's more than OK to try a brighter color, such as heather plum or bright saffron.

Plaid

The arrival of fall calls for the prep print to weasel its way back into our wardrobes. If this bold print scares you a bit, ease into it with this simple accessory.

Splurge: The Burberry Cashmere Blue Check Plaid scarf ($225.00 at designersimports.com) is a chic alternative to the classic Burberry print. This scarf is perfect for both brisk fall days and long walks to class in the snow.

Save: The Nollie Plaid Piper Warm scarf ($14.50 at shop.pacsun.com) is more of a grungy plaid print and gives off more of an earthy vibe than the preppy Burberry plaid. Use it to dress up a fall coat or a winter jacket at a fraction of the designer cost.

Floral

A fun floral print around a neck can instantly transform any dull, drab outfit, providing just the right amount of flare.

Splurge: The Free People Painters Pallette scarf ($48.00 at freepeople.com) is a scarf with a delicate mixture of off-white and bright colors in a floral design. These colors would easily brighten up any dull fall complexion.

Save: The Hollister Seagrove scarf in Navy Floral ($29.50 at hollisterco.com) has the same pattern but in more muted colors. Wearing this scarf will still add playfulness to any dreary winter-wear without being too flashy.

Ethnic

Bold ethnic prints in rustic, fall colors are the perfect combination to dress up any ensemble and create the earthy vibe the season calls for.

Splurge: The TARNISH Square Ikat Print scarf ($98.00 at shop.nordstrom.com) has a gorgeous tribal print with sharp colors that are sure to draw attention. The layers of color and fringe are just enough to show off your wild side.

Save: The Patterned Rose Square scarf in Black ($24.00 at urbanoutfitters.com) has the same color scheme as the designer scarf but in a less fierce print. The alluring floral print and adorable fringe add a level of versatility that makes this piece a fabulous find.
