Plenty of entertainment for under 21 students

Most students know Penn State was rated the No. 3 party school in the country by the Princeton Review this year. But what some students may not know is there is more to do here than just party. Here are some other ideas to help cure the weekend-bug legally.

On campus

For the thrifty college student who doesn't mind saving a buck or two on the weekends, there is Late Night Penn State. The venue offers everything from movies, games, crafts and even recreation like laser tag to release any cooped up energy. Late Night is at the HUB-Robeson Center from 9 p.m. to midnight on Thursdays and 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

According to their mission statement, the Student Programming Association (SPA) "exists to serve the student body by providing diverse activities, programming assistance and resources."

The group often hosts free concerts ranging from Colbie Caillat to Augustana and works toward reducing student prices for many of its hosted activities. For information on upcoming events, visit www.clubs.psu.edu/up/pennstatespa.

Feeling too lazy to walk downtown for the weekend? Your local area government, Association of Residence Hall Students (ARHS), hosts everything from open mic nights, movies showings, karaokes and Casino Nights to cure any gambling urges. Find out about upcoming events in any residence commons through fliers and announcements.

Off campus

It could be the perfect way to celebrate "hump day." Anyone 18 and older can break it down on the dance floor every Wednesday at the Cell Block, 420 E. College Ave. It's more than just dancing, however, with past events including guest DJs and Real World celebrities. The cover charge is $7 with a student ID and $10 without. Doors open at 9 p.m.

For weekends students can check out Chronic Town, 224 W. College Ave, a downtown hookah lounge, which offers more than 50 tobacco flavors starting at $6 for a single hose. Employee and graduate Jesse Reugg said some favorite flavors are California dream, watermelon and orange cream. Chronic Town also hosts musical acts ranging from local bands to Loney, Dear, a folk band from Sweden.

Another Wednesday night winner, Tony's Big Easy Bar and Bistro, 129 S. Pugh St., hosts an 18 and older salsa dancing night every Wednesday.
