RUNDOWN AT THE BJC

Students can get tickets now for a variety of events happening this fall at the BJC

Within the past few weeks, Bernie Punt has been getting a number of e-mails with the same request -- a chance to meet the Jonas Brothers.

"I've had over 200 requests from people asking me how they can meet the Jonas Brothers," Punt said. "People will e-mail me pretending to be my best friend -- it's pretty funny."

The Jonas Brothers, stars on the Disney Channel, are among the diverse lineup of acts expected at the Bryce Jordan Center in the coming months. Students can also be on the lookout for performances ranging from comedian and ventriloquist Jeff Dunham to the original American Idol, Kelly Clarkson, to even professional bull riding, among others.

With all those shows, ticket sales have been going strong all summer, Punt said.

"The Jonas Brothers and Jeff Dunham have been selling really well so far," Punt said. "I have a feeling when students come back in the fall, they will find out how cheap student tickets are, and they will be selling even better."

The Jonas Brothers, originally from suburban New Jersey, went from being Disney Channel teenyboppers to playing in the big leagues of the music "biz." Their ticket sales, which started June 14, have been selling well, Punt said. Tickets are $20 for Penn State students.

"I really want tickets for the Jonas Brothers," Christina Garrison (freshman-division of undergraduate studies) said. "I haven't gotten them yet, but I will get them. I will be there and I will be a crazed fan."

Following the Jonas Brothers concert is a new tour to the BJC.

Professional bull riding will be at the BJC Sept. 12 and Sept. 13. The show includes cowboys performing for points that go toward their chance at the finals in Las Vegas, Punt said. Tickets are $25 for students.

"We haven't started advertising for the bull riding show yet, but once we do, we're expecting the sales to definitely increase," Punt said. "We normally start to advertise a few weeks before each show."

On Sept. 14, following the bull riding event, is Earth, Wind and Fire, who will also be performing with Michael McDonald, a member from the band, The Doobie Brothers.

"It'll be a big challenge behind the scenes at the BJC that night," Punt said. "We'll have to get rid of all the dirt from bull riding and turn it into the concert set up for Earth, Wind and Fire in 12 hours."

Dunham, known for his performance that includes puppets such as the crotchety old man, Walter, Achmed the Dead Terrorist and the purple monkey, Peanut, will perform Sept. 21.

Dunham has done a number of performances, and is best known for his stand-up acts on the television channel, Comedy Central. Dunham has also made appearances on different late night shows such as the Late Night with David Letterman and The Tonight Show.

Priced at $25 for students, this comedic act is expected to be one of the more popular shows of the summer and fall seasons, Punt said.

"It's up there with the Jonas Brothers," he said.

The 2008 World Tour of Gymnastics Superstars, a 36-city traveling show, will be at the BJC Oct. 24. Some of the gymnasts include Shawn Johnson and Penn State's own Kevin Tan, an assistant coach for the Penn State men's gymnastics team and the captain of the U.S. men's Olympic gymnastics team.

This show will include a performance from rising Disney Channel star, Jordan Pruitt. Said to be the next Miley Cyrus, or "Hannah Montana" as the younger generation knows her, Pruitt will be performing songs similar to Cryus', as well as songs from the Disney Channel's The Cheetah Girls, Plain White Ts and Jesse McCartney, Punt said.

"The show will feature American gymnasts performing to all the hottest music out there," Punt said. "It's more like a mini-concert with gymnasts."

Finishing off October is Clarkson, American Idol's first winner. Clarkson will be touring the country with famous country music singer, Reba McEntire. The duet will be stopping at the BJC on Halloween.

"I'm so excited for that show," Kacie Stonesifer (freshman-elementary education) said. "I really want to get tickets to see her -- I just haven't made it up [to the BJC] yet."

None of the shows for this fall are sold out yet. Students can get more information about the shows at the BJC's Web site, www.bjc.psu.edu.
