Whodunnit

Schlow library will play host to an interactive murder mystery

There's been a murder in the Centre Region Library, and it's up to you to figure out whodunnit.

Wannabe detectives can comb the crime scene searching for clues at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Schlow Centre Region Library, 211 S. Allen St.

"It's like a real-life version of Clue," said Pat Griffith, the adult services librarian. "It's sure to be a fun night for all."

In "A Murderous Melodrama," participants can try to solve the murder of the star of a high school play. The victim was found dead at center stage with a rope tied around his ankles.

The event will hopefully spark

new interest in forensic science,

Mitch Holland, associate director of forensic science at Penn State, said.

In recent years, murder mysteries and forensic science have become prevalent in popular culture, Holland said. The increased exposure to forensics through television, movies and events such as this is greatly increasing students' interests to study forensic science, Holland said.

Will Bassett (freshman-landscape architecture) is an avid watcher of the CSI series. He hopes that the event will bring the show to life.

"I'd definitely want to go to that," Bassett said. "It really sounds like a lot of fun."

Interested participants, like Bassett, will have the opportunity to talk with the suspects, played by library staff and volunteers.

Holland said participants should ask many detailed questions and search the scene carefully to solve the murder. Holland is not affiliated with the event at the library.

The library is very excited to host the murder mystery night since it is something new for the library, Griffith said.

The Schlow Centre Region Library's current location opened its doors in October 2005 and has hosted numerous types of events, according to www.schlowlibrary.org.

Yet, this is the first time the Schlow Library has hosted this type of event, but it has been done at numerous other libraries, Griffith said.

Penn State students are encouraged to participate in the event, Lorich said.

The search is free for all attendees, and refreshments will be provided, according to a press release.

Participants can pre-register for the event by e-mailing refdesk@schlowlibrary.org or calling (814) 237-6236.
