Locking her door just before heading to class, Priya Vijay paused, deciding if a jam featuring old time, bluegrass and gospel music would provide a comfortable environment to relax and enjoy music.
"The jam would be a nice little break from studying," Vijay (sophomore-pre-medicine) said.
The jam session will take place Tuesday night from 7 to 10 p.m. at Pine Hall Lutheran Church, 1760 W. College Ave. and is open to the public free of charge, said Scott Krug, host of the session.
The jam session aims to interest audiences because the informal session often features unrehearsed music, Krug said.
"It's pretty exciting you can get 20 to 30 musicians together every Tuesday night for six years," Krug said.
The event has been going on for six years and has a steady following, though newcomers are encouraged to attend, Krug said.
"It's not a concert, it's a jam for musicians and beginners," Krug said.
He added anyone interested in music, particularly old time, bluegrass, and gospel would truly enjoy the event.
"It would be a really cool idea, just to get out and hang out," Jen Gramley (senior-biobehavioral health) said.
Krug added people bring cakes, cookies and other goodies.
The casual environment, good food and people would interest college students to go, Vijay said.
The jam is not intended to draw any particular audience. Pine Hall Lutheran Church hosts the event to encourage people of all musical backgrounds to come listen and enjoy the music, Krug said.
"Knowing that it's in a safe environment would make me feel comfortable," Vijay said.
People in the audience are invited to interact with the musicians during a break in the jam session, Krug said.
People who enjoy bluegrass and want to unwind would enjoy the jam, Vijay said.
"We play for ourselves and we like the music," Krug said. "Anyone who likes that kind of music is encouraged to come and listen."
