Naked Dudes

Broadway musical adapted for Boal Barn Theatre

Hard times and possible male nudity are coming to State College.

Sponsored by the State College Community Theatre, The Full Monty, a Broadway musical, will be performed at 8 p.m. on Aug. 6 to 9, 12 to 16 and 19 to 23 at the Boal Barn Playhouse, 300 Old Boalsburg Road. The original Broadway show was nominated for 10 Tony Awards in 2001 and will be adapted to the unusual round stage of the Boal Barn.

Beyond a little bit of exposure, Valerie Gehn, the director of the show, said the humor is tangible in the production. She stressed the social relevance of the musical.

"Terrence McNally wrote about economics and out of work people, which is rather timely in many ways," Gehn said.

The musical revolves around six unemployed steel workers from Buffalo, N.Y., who resort to male stripping after seeing their wives gush over other professionals, according to the State College Community Theatre Web site, www.scctonline.org.

Stephanie Baker, who plays Georgie Bukatinsky, wouldn't reveal if the show will actually reach the full monty, though Gehn said everyone is comfortable around each other.

"They all make each other laugh," Gehn said. "We made sure we had actors who knew what they were getting into -- or out of."

Though Gehn was quick to praise her cast for their hard work and cooperation, she also described the change to a round stage as the most difficult chore for the cast to accomplish.

"It's not easy to adapt from Broadway," Gehn said. "Choreography is different, you have to make sure everyone can see the stage."

After the men begin their act, the musical focuses on personal issues facing each member, ranging from anxiety to depression, Gehn said.

News of the musical brought a mixed reaction out of students.

"Hell yeah I'd see that. Naked guys on stage -- what else do you need to say?" Morgan Jones (freshman-forensic science) said. "I'm probably going to regret saying that."

Other students were slightly more serious about the upcoming musical.

"I'd go to see how it's performed, analyze how well acted [it is] and to see if they really were their characters," Kirstie Hudson (freshman-classics and ancient Mediterranean studies) said.

Members of the cast also discussed the light-hearted nature of the actors and actresses behind the scenes.

"We're having a blast with this show. It's a hilarious show and we can't stop cracking jokes," Baker said. "Come out expecting to have a fun night. It's a nice ending to summer and a good way to kick off the fall."
