A multicultural evening of music at local teashop

Beyond the coffee shop appeal, the warm and inviting atmosphere of East West Crossings makes it Jim Colbert's favorite place to perform.

"It just has the right vibe," said Colbert, a member of Acoustic Brew Concert Series. "A very supportive and nurturing environment."

On Friday, Colbert will again perform at the coffee shop, as a three-hour musical performance is set for 6 p.m. Friday at East West Crossings, 201 Elmwood St. Bands Aznavi and Fieldstone will present a medley of Celtic and Indian folk music, said Ran Mitra, owner of East West Crossings.

The evening will break the mold of East West Crossings typical live music night, offering an additional hour of entertainment and a diverse cross of Eastern and Western music, Mitra said.

"We are very encouraging of the diversity of music we have here. This is a very exciting time for everyone. It is a good blend of east and west," Mitra said.

Indian drums, flute, acoustic guitar and a variety of other instruments will produce an environment excellent for relaxing and sipping tea, Mitra said.

"We also have a variety of people coming to listen to this type of music, to have a pleasant evening," Mitra said.

He added cultural expositions are one of the main things East West Crossings tries to promote.

"I think it would appeal to students so that they could learn about diversity," Jessica Lin (senior-comparative literature) said.

Musical performances at East West Crossings typically consist of one or two musicians performing a two-hour series. Though the groups are different and formerly unknown to one another, Colbert, a familiar face from the Acoustic Brew Coffeehouse concert series, will be performing alongside the musicians, Mitra said.

He added Colbert has been a mainstay of folk music in the area for a long time; he regularly comes to sing at East West Crossings.

"I love the idea of having a multicultural evening," Colbert said. "East West Crossings is very warm, very inviting, a really good atmosphere."

Mitra added the personal atmosphere of East West Crossings provides guests the opportunity to talk to performers, learn about cultures and understand the inspiration for their music.

Breaks in between the performances will allow guests to ask questions and interact with the musicians, Mitra said. A donation hat will be passed to help support the musicians.

East West Crossings is Colbert's favorite place in State College to perform because it encourages guests to gain a little bit of appreciation for other cultures and music genres, Colbert said.

"Our mission is to bring the world together for international good will," Mitra said.
