State College might not be the fashion capital of the world, but warm weather means the arrival of spring and summer collections at a number of downtown stores offering something for every style. This season's trends are all about sundresses, light jackets, and totes in classic styles. Whether you rock vintage treads, relax in a campus casual look, or explore distant lands through your clothes, these downtown emporiums can cater to your spring shopping needs.
Abercrombie & Fitch, 138 S. Allen St.
A company that was founded as an elite sporting goods outfitter is now a staple of the college fashion scene. The "casual luxury" brand offers classic, laid-back styles made to last.
This spring, the store has a selection of men's polos in every color that can be paired with its wide choice of twill and athletic shorts. For women, floral patterns, smocked busts and empire waists are gracing the racks of the store next to a new trend: spring scarves. Abercrombie & Fitch is also carrying a line of tote bags in vintage washes and preppy striped patterns.
Jezebel's Boutique, 366 E. College Ave.
Penn State women can show their school pride right down to their underwear. Patty and Jessie Stover, the mother-daughter team who owns the boutique, are offering Penn State students a unique way to display their school colors.
"We have a blue-and-white thong. No one else has it anywhere," Patty Stover said. "It's a limited edition thing. We specifically ordered it for our store."
The boutique is also offering Hanky Panky brand underwear in spring colors like yellow, white, aqua blue and pink. Stover said they have been selling a lot of strapless bras and "sticky bras," which are perfect for formal and the prom season.
Stover said to watch out for upcoming sales for the end of the school year.
Metro, 320 E. College Ave.
Metro is armed and ready for hot weather and strapped-for-cash college students. The store is packed with a rainbow display of T-shirts, dresses, bags and jeans.
"We have stuff in a lot of really bright colors like oranges, yellows, hot pinks," employee Alissa Gubitoso said. "There are a ton of dresses right now, as well as new flip flops and strappy tank tops."
Clothing by Free People can be found in the middle of the store. The earthy, textured tops are detailed with unique embroidery and cutouts.
Another distinctive find is the store's watch selection. Watches with large faces, bands and accents like rhinestones are a popular summer trend.
Gubitoso said brands like Hard Tail and So Low are selling fast. Metro's entire back section is currently devoted to pieces marked down 75 percent.
Mr. Charles, 228 E. College Ave.
Featuring a collection of designer brands like C&C California and Seven for All Mankind, Mr. Charles is an upscale boutique that borrows from New York City style.
"We have a lot of short dresses and cute, springy jackets right now," employee Katie Rosen said. "We are selling a lot of BB Dakota and jeans from Citizens of Humanity."
The Rebecca Taylor Silk Dot Dress is
a dressed-up, summer-style frock with
cap sleeves and ruffle details around the neck.
Rosen said almost all of the store's jeans are on sale for 20 to 50 percent off, and spring jackets are also discounted. The store also has a sale rack of winter clothing marked with half-off discounts.
The Rag and Bone, 240 E. Calder Way
"I think a lot of people come in here and see things that might be crazy or wacky," said Rag and Bone employee Danny Brumbaugh. "There really is something here for everyone though."
Rag and Bone is Penn State's source for vintage clothing from every decade. Whether for sale or for rent, every article of clothing is authentic, handpicked and restored. The spring collection has print blazers, cotton sundresses and unique formal wear.
The store is a creative source for trends that are being recycled today. The store is organized by decade, so check the 1960s for high-waisted pants and print skirts.
Sunshine Imports, 127 E. Beaver Ave.
If your wardrobe is in need of a "green" makeover, head to Sunshine Imports. The store has an assortment of all-natural fiber clothes.
Handcrafted sterling silver and gemstone jewelry, as well as folk art, organic cotton-string bags, and tapestries from Indonesia can be found in this environmentally friendly shop.
