Roustabout! bands' ties more personal than musical

Although the three bands playing Thursday's Roustabout! have something -- or someone -- in common, they each have their own sound that will make for a very different show.

Roy Williams(junior-American studies) serves as lead vocalist in the Minor White, and is also a member of Scranton's And the Moneynotes. His brother, Kevin, plays keyboard and sings for the Minor White and his brother Mitchell plays acoustic guitar and sings for And the Moneynotes.

It's all part of what Williams calls a somewhat "incestuous" relationship among State College bands, but despite this connection, he maintains the bands are different.

"In [the Minor White] there are the five of us, and we all have pretty much the exact same taste in music," said Williams, who plays guitar and piano for the Minor White and lends piano and vocals for And the Moneynotes. "We have clear intentions. In the Moneynotes, there are so many people. There are seven of us, with tons of different influences, so the Moneynote stuff can be more of a crap shoot."

There is also a connection between the Spinto Band and the two other bands playing at Roustabout!. Both And the Moneynotes and the Minor White are releasing new material in the summer, and Nick Krill, guitar player for the Spinto Band, is mixing them.

"He's a saint," Williams said, "He never loses his cool and is always in good spirits. He is an unbelievable engineer with sound recording."

And the Moneynotes is planning to release its record June 24, and Williams speculates the Minor White album will be out sometime in July. Jon Eaton, guitar player for the Spinto Band, said his band also has a new EP on the way, one it recorded in Los Angeles with Dave Trumfio, who's produced bands such as Wilco and My Morning Jacket. Because the band is in between labels, it's still deciding how to release the record.

Williams said the Minor White's new effort sounds more professional. He also said the Minor White veered away from synthesizers, distortion, pedals and amps to create a more "authentic" sound.

Williams said the band is mostly influenced by classic bands such as the Beatles and the Kinks, but what they create is original.

"We are mainly influenced by our ambition," Williams said.

He added he personally loves making music with a lot of different dynamics and time changes because it keeps him, as well as the audience, interested and invested in the band's music.

Jesse Ruegg, the promoter of Roustabout!, described the Minor White as having a ramshackle, earthy sound, And the Moneynotes as a high intensity crowd-pleaser and the Spinto Band as a witty indie-pop act.

He said he would not be surprised if the bands attain regional and national success.

The Spinto Band has already received notoriety in the United Kingdom. They were guests on BBC's Later with Jool's Holland in 2006.

"That was a really cool experience," Eaton said. "We got to go hang out at BBC television studios in London and we got to meet Eddie Vedder and Jamie Foxx and Jenny Lewis and they were just hanging out."

Though it has been well received in the United Kingdom, the band has received a mixture of criticism and adulation from music blogs, such as Pitchforkmedia.com.

Eaton said the band has a good attitude toward the input, regardless of its favor.

"Usually no one is that vicious towards us, so we'll see when the album comes out and they start reviewing it," he said. "We should get some good ones, but for the time being we're all right."
