Pennsylvania, you deserve a break.
Just two days ago, your noble citizens cast their ballots for the presidential primaries, favoring Hillary Clinton and the "Arizona Assassin" John McCain and ending a six-week stretch of the election season when you were the only contest around. Not that you were a bad prize. With your delegate bounty, who can blame the candidates for crisscrossing the state like a political connect-the-dots?
Still, these candidates could have been a little nicer about their invasion. Pennsylvania is a classy and dignified commonwealth, not some anything-goes, revolving-door Benelux country. The state was caught in the crossfire of a Democratic back-and-forth. It was exciting, but when we were called bitter and clingy, feelings got hurt.
Fortunately, healing and a renewed sense of unity are on the way, and it all starts right here, with this weekend's Movin' On.
The two big names playing the free spring send-off are Wu-Tang Clan's Raekwon and L.A. rock band Say Anything. I don't know much about either act, but I think it's a safe call to say they have different aesthetics, different things they value. A variety... hmmm... does that remind you of something else that's pretty great? Maybe something called "America?" The fact of the matter is that -- except for the free part -- Movin' On is a microcosm of the nation, a time when people of all walks of life come together to rock out.
Check out our Movin' On coverage and, of course, the music festival itself. Hopefully we'll get to witness a collaboration or two, but remember that the greatest collaboration is something called democracy, and we are all featured artists.
Billy Wellock is a sophomore majoring in English and The Daily Collegian Venues chief. His e-mail is waw5010@psu.edu and he's free to collaborate this weekend, baby.
