Father Time, James Bond and a pantless stoner will take the stage tonight in 111 Forum during this year's No Refund Theatre (NRT) and Phroth collaborative effort, Phroth Phest.
The sketch comedy show is written and produced by members of Penn State comedy club Phroth, the same group responsible for Phaily Phollegian and Phroth Magazine, which hit campus Tuesday in honor of April Fool's Day.
After Phroth writes the sketches, the scripts are handed over to members of NRT, who perform Phroth Phest as a part of their spring semester lineup of shows.
Co-director and Phroth writer Eden Reis (junior-health policy and administration) said the two organizations work together to make the best show possible and NRT tweaks the Phroth script to "make sketches even funnier."
This year's 14-sketch show will include some political humor, a "007 spoof," a stoned character with no pants expounding on the virtues of his drug of choice, a boombox-toting Father Time and an episode that demonstrates the disparities between girl talk and guy talk.
Short "how to" cutscenes will entertain the crowd during breaks between sketches when a longer setup is required.
Phroth meets throughout the semester to plan the annual comic collaboration, Reis said.
"It'll be just as good, if not better than last year," she said, adding last year's performance had a large turnout.
Phroth Phest usually draws the biggest NRT crowd, NRT member and second co-director Jeff Kornberg (senior-English) said, adding the involvement of two campus organizations helps boost attendance.
"It has a definite reputation around campus," said Kornberg, who will perform an original composition on acoustic guitar during the show.
Kornberg is not the only member of the production pulling double duty. Each cast member plays about four to six different characters throughout the show.
Reis said because the show includes such a broad spectrum of sketches, many different types of humor are used, which helps to makes the show accessible to many people.
