Clothes morph dull vacation into adventure

Fashion never takes a vacation, but over-packers need not fear this spring break. Whether you are heading for warmer waters or lacing up your hiking boots for a European adventure, investing in these stylish staples will keep you sharp, even if your physics lessons start to get fuzzy.

Lovely Luggage

Sturdy and dependable luggage that stands out from the millions of black and blue suitcases can save you time and protect your bag from being lost or stolen.

The Samsonite Surge 22" Wheeled Duffel ($29.99 at luggagepoint.com) is sturdier than a boxy suitcase, and big enough to hold most of your clothing.

The Roxy Check on It Luggage Set ($125 at pacsun.com) features a backpack with laptop sleeve, duffel bag and rolling suitcase.

On-the-go Style

If you'd rather backpack through the South of France or sail through the Caribbean on a 40-foot sloop, make sure you leave the fanny-pack at home. Looking like a tourist is a fashion faux pas. Stick to comfortable, clean-cut shapes and classic colors.

For girls, the striped cotton short ($22.80 at forever21.com) has patch pockets and antique-looking hardware complementing its taupe color. Pair it with the Eyelet Ruffle Babydoll ($24.50 at alloy.com).

Sneakers don't have to be athletic or frumpy looking. Choose sneakers that resemble more fashionable flats, with features like bows or straps.

The Amherst Roxy sneaker and the BC Ladies First sneaker (both $19.99 at journeys.com) fit the bill for high fashion stepping.

For guys, cargo shorts are a perfect way to store your camera, wallet, cell phone and passport without looking like you are smuggling something out of the country.

The lightweight chino cargo short ($64.50 at jcrew.com) has a broken-in texture so you look like an experienced traveler. Also, the brown Jumper shirt ($39.90 at H&M stores) is lightweight and comfortable, but warm enough for those strong coastal winds.

Sand and Surf

So the ocean, MTV spring break specials and a bottle of tanning oil are your vacation scene? This year's refined bathing suits and cover-ups will keep you looking as hot as the Cancun sun. According to fashion site suite101.com, this season's look is all about taking inspiration from retro fashions.

For girls, bikinis are phased out by the more sophisticated one-piece. With its flattering shape and colors, the DKNY Twist Front One Piece ($96 at victoriassecret.com) is an elegant choice.

A classy cover-up that can be worn day or night will save you a lot of space in your suitcase. An airy dress like the Linen Caftan Dress ($65 at victoriassecret.com) can instantly transform into exotic nightwear just by adding a wide belt or strappy heels.

For guys, swimwear is a flashback to the '80s. Highlighter-bright colors, bold graphics and skate-wear inspirations are making waves on the runways.

The Billabong 1986 17" Boardshort ($49.50 at swell.com) or the Juicy Couture Athletic Board Shorts ($78 at neimanmarcus.com) will take you back to the days of Ninja Turtles and The Bangles.
