Save vs. Splurge

When it comes to eyeshadow, we should all take a lesson from Edie Sedgwick.

Sedgwick, Andy Warhol's famous muse, used eyeshadow to bring some "pop" to her lids. But unlike the socialite sensation, you don't need to spend your entire inheritance to get the look you want. These inexpensive shadows have the ability to take you from a daytime look to nighttime one with just a swipe of a brush.

Primers

These base coats will prevent creasing and make your eyeshadow last longer. Just apply a thin layer over your eyelids prior to color.

Splurge: Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion ($16, urbandecay.com) is worth the price. It dries fast and will help eyeshadow last for hours and hours.

Save: Ultima II Eyeshadow Base ($13.50, Ulta stores) is oil-based, so it prevents smearing and smudging makeup while moisturizing the thin skin around your eyes.

Single Shadows

These pocket-sized goodies come in hundreds of different colors, including bronzers and high-intensity pigments. With so many to choose from, they are perfect for any occasion.

Splurge: MAC Paint Pot ($16.50, maccosmetics.com) dries with an intense and colorful finish. It goes on creamy and doesn't cake or crease.

Save: CoverGirl CG Eyeslicks Gel Eyecolor ($5.99, drugstores) have a pencil-like applicator that is easy to use with a "twist-up" top that makes no messes.

Crème Shadows

Lightweight and cooling, these shadows feel like whipped mousse but dry to a powder finish.

Splurge: Stila Shadow Pots Eye Mousse ($20, Sephora stores) can be worn as a sheer shadow, or layered for a more opaque look.

Save: Revlon Illuminance Crème Shadow ($7.39, drugstores) includes four different shadows, including one that can be used as eyeliner.

Multi-Color Packs

Save: Max Factor MAXeye Shadow 3-Color Shadow ($6.49, drugstores) allows for versatile looks and has a color to highlight under eyebrows.

Eye Tints

Eye tints are a subtle way to enhance eye color and make peepers look bigger.
