Classic 1940s makeup leads to movie-star looks

The 1940s were one of the most romantic eras in film and television. It's no wonder many of today's films, such as The Notebook and Pearl Harbor, are set in this time. Even 60 years later, the looks made popular by the films and stars of that era can make anyone fall in love.

However, to get these looks you don't have get into a time machine or break the bank. These vintage 1940s-inspired makeup trends will have your beloved singing your praises about "the way you look tonight."

Primp the Pout

One of the staples of the 1940s look is the red lip. However, not everyone is ready to pull off the big, bold splash of color. Instead, opt for a sheer red gloss.

Splurge: Stila's Lip and Cheek Stain in cherry red ($24, Sephora) is a multi-tasker that acts as both a lip color and a blush.

Save: CoverGirl's Lipslicks in "daring" ($3.99, drugstores) offers sheer color with a whole lot of shine.

Get Cheeky

Another must-have look for the vintage beauty is the rosy cheek. But a modern girl need not dip her face in rouge to achieve the old-school style. Just add a little shimmer to your shake to increase the glam.

Splurge: Dior's "Diorskin Magic" Shimmer Pressed Powder in rose diamond ($42, department stores) gives the perfect balance of rose-touched cheeks and a sheer shimmer that makes skin look flawless.

Save: L'Oreal's Bare Naturale Blush in sugar plum ($11.24, drugstores) is a more natural option for sheer blush with a hint of color.

Entice the Eyes

There are three secrets to dazzling eyes: a sheer and iridescent shadow, bold eyeliner and lush lashes.

Splurge: Laura Mercier Mineral Eye Powder in moonstone ($20, Nordstrom.com) gives the sheer look with the undeniable benefits of mineral makeup (i.e. it's great for your skin).

Save: CoverGirl's Eye Enhancers in French vanilla ($3.49, drugstores) is easy to blend and its pearly finish will leave behind dazzling eyes.

For eyeliner, the trick is to start from the inner corner of the lid and line along the lash line, following the contour of the eye. Want more drama? Apply slightly heavier at the outer corners of the eye.

Splurge: Lancome Artliner-Precision Eye Liner in noir ($28, Sephora) is easy-to-handle liquid liner that gives the user absolutely insane precision.

Save: Maybelline Line Works Liquid Liner in black ($7.29, drugstores) has a flexible tip for mistake-proof control and is great for all-day wear.

Finally, for lashes, bigger is better. Always remember to curl eyelashes before you apply mascara.

Splurge: Dior's Diorshow Mascara in black ($24, department stores) is a one-step wonder. It adds dramatic volume, amazing length and an enhancing curl to lashes that is quite show-stopping.

Save: Revlon's 3D Extreme in Blackest Black ($9.99, drugstores) definitely is not for shy eyes. This mascara is a definite dazzler, and according to Amazon.com, it makes lashes look up to 25 times fuller, 70 percent curvier and 80 percent longer with amazing separation precision.
