For those craving their favorite television programming during the writers' strike, here are some old stand-bys that could help fill the void.
'Desperate Housewives'
Episodes Left: None
Synopsis: A group of women from Wisteria Lane are observed through the memory of a dead friend. Secrets and scandal thrive in this steamy show that features Teri Hatcher, Marcia Cross, Felicity Huffman, Eva Longoria and Nicolette Sheridan.
You May Like: Golden Girls
Why: Though these women may be a bit old, this sitcom ran for seven seasons, which should hopefully amuse you at least until the strike is over.
This show follows three elderly women who move in together and get into all sorts of trouble before they help each other out of it. This show handles many issues that were considered controversial for its time, including plastic surgery, illegal immigration, lesbianism and suicide.
Just as Desperate Housewives is considered risqué today, Golden Girls was considered scandalous during its run on television.
'The Office'
Episodes Left: None
Synopsis: The show, a fictional documentary, follows the antics of employees of the Dunder Mifflin Paper Company in the beautiful city of Scranton, Pa.
You May Like: The UK version of The Office
Why: The stateside version of The Office is based off the UK version. The UK version, which takes place at the paper company Wernham Hogg, is a little racier than its U.S. counterpart. The jokes are edgier, and there are some bits the FCC would probably not approve of. There is also some British slang, so you may want to be prepared to do some Google.com searches. There are three full seasons of this groundbreaking comedy, plenty for you to survive through Steve Carell withdrawal.
'Lost'
Episodes Left: Seven, including this week
Synopsis: Oceanic Flight 815 crashes on an island where strange things happen. The survivors soon realize they are not alone on the island and are constantly at odds with the "others."
You May Like: The Twilight Zone
Why: This old show, narrated by Rod Serling, has a different story line each week and always has a creepy twist at the end, just like Lost has at the end of most of their episodes. However, The Twilight Zone actually answers your questions. Furthermore, there is a seemingly endless amount of episodes of The Twilight Zone, so the strike could conceivably last for a year or two and you would still have episodes of this show to watch.
'24'
Episodes Left: Though eight episodes were filmed, 24 is postponed indefinitely because the show needs all of its episodes, thereby allowing it to fit into the 24-hour time frame, a 24 trademark.
Synopsis: Each season documents 24 hours in real time of the life of Jack Bauer, who works with the government to fight threats in America.
You May Like: La Femme Nikita (the TV series, not to be confused with the movie)
Why: Joel Surnow created La Femme Nikita and later co-created 24. Nikita is forced to become an agent of an elite anti-terrorist organization after she is believed to have killed someone. She is coerced into complying with the organization and uses its gruesome tactics in order to survive. Both Nikita and Jack Bauer face internal turmoil while they are trying to balance preserving their humanity and fulfilling their duties in their anti-terrorist organizations.
'Ugly Betty'
Episodes Left: None
Synopsis: Betty lands a job at Mode magazine as a personal assistant but lacks social grace and is ridiculed in a world where only looks seem to matter.
You May Like: Freaks and Geeks
Why: Set in the 1980s, Freaks and Geeks follows high school outcasts as they try to fit into the exalted cool crowd. Just like Ugly Betty, the show portrays awkward people with good hearts who are simply trying to survive in a society that has elevated perceptions and ideals of beauty and what is considered "normal." Though canceled after one season, this comedic series is worth the watch, at least until Ugly Betty is back on. The series' executive producer was Judd Apatow, who has produced films such as Superbad and Knocked Up, which accurately indicate the type of hilarity found in the series.
'Grey's Anatomy'
Episodes Left: None
Synopsis: The show follows residents at Seattle Grace Hospital. Their quirky personalities and complicated love hexagons make this show a treat to watch.
You May Like: ER
Why: Michael Crichton created this medical masterpiece. Set in the emergency room of County General Hospital, the show follows medical students who are working to become doctors. ER, which is still on the air, has also been disrupted by the writers' strike. After 14 seasons, it is the longest running primetime medical drama on television. The original cast included George Clooney, which is a nice bonus to this series. This series should be able to fulfill all your medical drama needs and keep you from constantly wondering whom Meredith Grey will sleep with next.
