Best friends face extreme competition in new reality TV series

Kenny Hotz said he remembers the first time he met his best friend Spencer Rice (Spenny) at a Toronto Zoo. The two were there with their fathers, and Spenny was being gang raped by a group of orangutans. He has since been barred from any zoo in Canada.

Seriously, however, Kenny and Spenny have been friends for as long as Kenny can remember, he said, and their Comedy Central show Kenny vs. Spenny, executive produced by Trey Parker and Matt Stone of South Park fame, is a testament to their long-lasting friendship.

The reality show, based off the extreme competition in Kenny and Spenny's friendship, chronicles a different competition every week, Kenny said. The loser of the competition must face a "humiliation," concocted by the winner. Some humiliations have included making out with an old lady, eating a spoonful of vomit and being farted on by the farting champion of Canada.

"We've always been competitive," he said. "The show is so real it's scary."

The titles of episodes range from the tame "Who Can Eat More Meat?" episode, to the more controversial "First Guy To Get a Boner Loses" and "Who Can Stay Naked the Longest?" episodes.

The show, which has aired in Canada since 2002, has been popular, Kenny said, but the road to getting it on the air was not easy.

Kenny said he was living in Los Angeles without a car, sleeping on a couch and eating ketchup sandwiches for five years before anything materialized. He added that half of his girlfriends broke up with him because he wanted to be a filmmaker.

He said it was also difficult to get the series on air in Canada because of some of the content.

"We're like a smack in the face to the entire Canadian morality system," he said, because the government of Canada funds a lot of media. "You guys are profit-motivated and we're culturally motivated."

Because Kenny usually cheats during the competitions -- drinking non-alcoholic beer during "Who Can Drink More Beer" for example -- and needs time to prepare, he usually comes up with the duel and then asks Spenny if he would like to participate in the competition. Spenny usually agrees to the ones he thinks he can win, not knowing that Kenny already has a plan to cheat his way to victory.

Spenny is usually not very happy when he sees the episodes air and realizes that Kenny had cheated.

"He thinks I was cheating but it was real beer," Kenny said about the beer drinking competition. "That was a pretty smart plan to drink beer without alcohol in it."

Kenny said that, unlike a lot of reality television shows recently, he thinks Kenny vs. Spenny has become better since it first aired in Canada five years ago.

"I just like pushing Spencer's buttons, and people like seeing me abuse him as much as I enjoy abusing him," Kenny said.
