Kenneth Gorelick has no gold records, no hit singles and no reputation as a top-selling jazz musician.
But that's because Kenneth Gorelick signs his name "Kenny G."
Kenny G is the best-selling modern instrumental musician, having sold more than 75 million records across the globe and 45 million in the United States alone, according to a tour press release.
At 8 tonight, Kenny G will bring that smooth jazz pedigree to the Bryce Jordan Center as part of his holiday-themed tour.
During his 25-year career, he has released eight studio albums along with an abundance of holiday, greatest hits, cover, compilation and live albums.
In 2006 alone, Kenny G released four albums: a live album, two compilations including a greatest hits album, and a cover album.
"As a pop artist, lots of people love his music," David Stambler, professor of saxophone at Penn State, said.
Stambler said the performance offers audiences a chance to see live music.
"It's great that we're bringing in national level artists to town. I hope that people will go support live music. It's wonderful to support live music, especially an instrumentalist," Stambler said.
Greg Johnson (sophomore-saxophone performance) said Kenny G's saxophone skills are good for students who might not otherwise listen to that type of music.
"He's bringing attention to the saxophone, which is always a good thing," Johnson said.
According to the press release, Kenny G plans to perform familiar songs from some of his best-selling albums including: I'm In The Mood For Love, Gravity, Duotones and Breathless. In addition, Kenny will bring holiday cheer to fans with a collection of songs off his holiday albums: The Greatest Holiday Classics, Miracles, Wishes: A Holiday Album and Faith: A Holiday Album.
"You would probably hear a lot of cover tunes, pop standards," Johnson said.
Those pop standards have earned him Grammy, American Music, Soul Train, World Music and NAACP Image Awards as well as a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, according to the press release.
"The genre of music that he plays is so different from mainstream jazz music," Johnson said. "It's kind of easier to listen to at times as opposed to other jazz music, which focuses on improvisation and spontaneity. ... He's true to the genre that he's created."
As a special event, the BJC will offer VIP tables at the concert with access to a holiday buffet.
According to the press release, Kenny is finishing up his next album, which is the debut album for Concord Music Group. The album will be released in February and is called Rhythm and Romance.
