PSU ballet club to present winter showcase

Volé will be taking "ballet to its limits" this weekend when the student-run company holds its semester show, Volé's Winter Repertoire, in the Playhouse Theatre.

"There's classical music, lyrical music and upbeat music. There's a nice variety and we want to please everyone," Ashley Suran (junior-art education), publicity chair of Volé, said.

Founded in 2000, Volé is the only club on campus that focuses solely on ballet. It is completely student-run and everyone is welcome, regardless of level.

"There are two parts to the Volé: the overall club and the company, which is made up of members of the club that want to perform. We hold technique classes ranging from beginner to advanced," Suran said.

Suran said the group is composed of girls of all different ages and majors -- dance minors being in the minority -- and added that the group wanted to keep the program very open for the choreographers to choose their own music.

Victoria Scanga (senior-broadcast journalism), president of Volé, said the biggest challenge with this show has been time and coordination.

"There's 100 girls and it's hard trying to get the entire club together. There are about 20 pieces, so that's about 20 hours of rehearsing a week and coordinating the girls' schedules have been difficult," Scanga said.

Suran said her favorite aspect of the club is the opportunity to choreograph pieces for the show. "I love the opportunity to choreograph. After one semester you have the chance to choreograph if you want. It's fun to create your own piece," Suran said.

Scanga said choreographing is also her favorite part of the club. "[Choreographing] is better than dancing. It's interesting to see how the dancers bring your dance to the stage," she said. "For this show I chose a lyrical song for my piece. It's always a little difficult because it depends on how the dancers respond to it."

Scanga said she is looking forward to seeing what kind of music the choreographers choose. "I'm excited to hear the different types of music and how they incorporate dance into the songs."

Suran said the audience can look forward to seeing the technical aspects of ballet with this performance.

"Students will see how ballet technique can be created into dance with different songs and types of music," she said.
