Alternative boots offer long shelf life, styles

Oh, the beloved Ugg boot. It keeps our toes comfortably toasty on those cold State College days with its shearling-lined interior. Whether they're sand, chestnut, black, tall or short, this Australian-made, surfer-intended boot has served its purpose well in the United States since its introduction a few years ago.

However, there are other boots out there that are unique and fashion-forward, not to mention sometimes have a longer shelf life than our friend the Ugg. Here are this winter season's recent boot trends if you are looking to try something fresh.

The High-Heel Boot

A classic that will never fade. Although people may believe that these sometimes pointy high-heeled boots will hurt toes, a well-made design can be worn for hours at a time. You can also consider investing in a genuine-leather boot because although there is a high price tag attached, it will last for years, maybe even decades, if you take good care of them.

The Pick: BCBGirls "Pave" Tall Boot in brown, $111.75 at Macy's

Why it Rocks: The oversized buckle on the side is what makes this boot a little different than most pointy-heeled boots. A three- and-three-quarter-inch heel adds any needed height and the almost-to-the-knee boot features a side zipper, so there won't be any struggles at the end of the day. The style is also perfect for everyday wear and transitioning into a night out.

The Flat Boot

Want to skimp on the heel? A flat boot is a perfect solution. These rubber-soled boots are easy to walk around and are guaranteed to be worry-free when trekking to class with icy sidewalks and snow-filled pathways.

The Pick: Sketcher's Puffy Flat Boot in black, $69 in Victoria's Secret catalog or at www.victoriassecret.com

Why it Rocks: This is a mod take on your mom's old snow boots. Covered in nylon and clinched for optimum insulation, these are the most fashionable weather-worthy boots I have come across.

The Western-Style Boot

Although the cowboy boot is not corralling the attention it used to, now it's regarded as a classic that offers a combination of style and practicality. Whether the boot is slouched with an ultra-pointy tip or stiff with a rounded front, this shoe brings out the rustic cowgirl in all of us.

The Pick: Frye Campus 14L Boots in blazer brown, $255 at Barefoot, 130 E. College Ave.

Why it Rocks: These well-crafted and genuine leather boots will last for years if maintained correctly and are a timeless shade of brown that is guaranteed to match any jean-and-shirt combination. They almost hit the knee (14L stands for 14 inches in length) and feature a two-inch stacked heel, adding dimension to any body type.

The Ankle Boot

Worn underneath pants or alone with tights, this boot offers a multiplicity of different style choices. In varieties such as rounded toes, cuffs, Oxford styled, point heels and an endless array of colors, there is an ankle boot out there for everyone.

The Pick: Jeffrey Campbell Mabel Suede Bootie in wine, $98 at Urban Outfitters

Why it Rocks: What makes this ankle boot stand out is the tassels that lace up the back of the heel, a unique take on this style of shoe that can be flaunted with a dress or skirt.

The Riding Boot

The equestrian-inspired boot has surfaced in recent seasons, giving those who don't want extra height a chance to wear a heel-free alternative. In brown and black varieties, they go perfectly with a pair of jeans or a sweater and strutting down College Avenue has never seemed smoother.

The Pick: Steve Madden Riding Boot in brown, $140 at www.piperlime.com

Why it Rocks: Riding boots' added height means more leather and more money. This tall-shaft boot, however, is affordable and stylish for a price that won't break your budget. In a color that can be worn everyday, this is the perfect boot to wear over boot cut or skinny jeans.
