Lil' Mama and I have something in common; we both love lip gloss.
With improved formulas that often feature conditioning and lip plumping ingredients, glosses are maintaining their color and shine all day, so our kissers look bigger and badder than ever, minus the irritating stickiness. Being that I am totally lip gloss obsessed, I have listed some of my personal favorites, including price savvy alternatives.
Pre-Gloss Conditioning Treatments
For glosses to work to their best potential, a gentle lip exfoliant and conditioning treatment should be done at least once a week.
Also, something to consider trying at home once a week: Gently brushing your lips with a toothbrush will remove any and all dead skin.
Splurge: Tarte FRXtion ($11 at Sephora) is a two-sided stick that pampers your pucker. One side is a brown sugar-based exfoliant that smoothes away any dryness or flakiness while the other side is a Vitamin E enriched lip balm, adding just enough moisture.
Save: Sally Hansen Lip Conditioner and Plumper ($5.49 at drugstores) mildly exfoliates lips when applied and rubbed together, instantly smoothing lips. Shea butter, green tea and vitamins soothe and prevent moisture loss.
Lip-Plumping Gloss
Thanks to new lip gloss technology, we can all flaunt bigger, fuller lips, and without going under the needle.
Splurge: Fusion Beauty LipFusion XL ($50 at Sephora and Victoria's Secret) utilizes marine collagen microspheres that seek out the body's natural moisture and retains it, causing lips to enlarge by "swelling." This particular gloss, which is intended as a nighttime treatment but can also be used during the day, has twice the amount of microspheres as the original formula, so results are immediate and can last up to 48 hours.
Save: Victoria's Secret Very Voluptuous Lip Plumper in Baby Pink ($18 at Victoria's Secret) also uses marine collagen microsphere technology to enlarge lips, but for half the price. Slightly tingly but not uncomfortable like the Very Voluptuous Extreme lip plump, this effective gloss also has self-adjusting pigment that adds a rosy glow to lips.
On-the-Go Gloss
Convenience and interesting packaging makes these two products noteworthy.
Splurge: Cargo DailyGloss ($12 at Sephora) supplies 30 days' worth of Cargo's award-winning lip glosses, in the form of a birth control packaging; where an oral contraceptive should be is a "bubble" filled with gloss (three shades, 10 bubbles each) that are also tear-away for easy stashing.
The gloss is non-sticky, long-wearing and ultra-moisturizing; isn't a daily dose of great gloss just as important as preventing pregnancy?
Save: Hard Candy Key to My Heart Lip Gloss ($6 at Sephora) has two shades of juicy lip color in a stylish plastic bauble that connects to your keys so you can reapply whenever and wherever.
High-Shine and Sparkle Glosses
Formulas have improved so that glosses are super shiny, super sparkly but not super sticky.
Splurge: Lancôme Cover Fever Gloss in Aflame ($22 at department stores) is a high-shine, high-sparkle gloss that comes in 15 great shades, including Aflame, which is a magenta color infused with shimmer.
Save: Underground by Rimmel London Kiss Off! Lip Gloss in Wild at Heart ($6.79 at drugstores) goes on smoothly and provides full coverage. This shade of bright, sparkly pink is perfect for going out at night.
Bright, Bold Colors
An alternative to lipsticks, pigment-rich lip glosses features colors are just as long-lasting.
Splurge: Nars Lip Gloss in Orgasm ($23 at Sephora) is the same peachy, pink color as the best-selling blush; it truly is the perfect "pink" for everyone. The gloss is extremely color-rich and won't budge the entire day.
Save: L'Oreal Sheer Juicy Lip Gloss in Raspberry Smash ($7.99 at drugstores) tastes as good as it looks on your pout. A sophisticated bright red that can be sheer or bold depending on amount applied, lips get a punch of color that stays put for hours.
Delectably Flavored Glosses
Hungry during class? Put some gloss on.
Splurge: Lorac Mocktail in Lava Flow ($18 at Sephora) is for the girl who occasionally craves a tropical cocktail. The shade Lava Flow is a shimmering berry color that dazzles your lips and taste buds. Applied with an anti-leak brush, this gloss polishes and adds just the right amount of color.
Save: Liplicious Lip Gloss in Maple Syrup ($6 at Bath and Body Works) is like eating a pile of pancakes, minus the calories. It seems like a dark color at first glance, but it goes on bronze with a hint of gold shimmer. Delicious.
