Men's fall fashion takes on new personality

No boxers will be protruding from guys' slacks this fall season. Baggy jeans, blazers and boring standards are out, and this year's men's fall fashion gives all wearers a chance to express their best physical features and personality.

A Step Away from the Basic Blazer

Last season's blazers are back, but with a twist.

Featuring heavier cottons, and not to mention creative detailing and style combinations, there are lots of options for keeping warm this fall.

Kevin Fessler, owner of Industrie, 115 S. Allen St., said the traditional blazer is fading, but designers are creating new variations.

"It's almost like [designers are] morphing styles, like taking a motorcycle-styled jacket and a blazer and combining it," he said.

Patches, zippers, stitching and different coloration treatments are just a few ways designers are jazzing up the blazer.

Simon Hawk, local fashion designer and creator of Maxwell's Designer Clothing, said leather is also prevalent for jacket styles.

"Leather is back, but not necessarily vintage leather, but classier, more high-end," he said. "Invest in a nice one instead of three cheap ones."

Patterned Hoodies

A scale-back from the traditional one-dimensional sweatshirt stamped with the occasional brand name, this season's hoodies are screaming with color and fresh, intricate patterns.

"The companies I'm working with are high fashion, so there is a lot of ... print along the whole entire fabric," Fessler said.

Reversible hoodies are also popular this season and are basically a two-for-one deal.

"On one side, you have one look, and then, you switch it around and it's completely different," he said.

Polos with Personality

Steering away from the traditional collared shirts, embroidery, patterns and eye-catching colors are being featured on polos this season.

Fessler said finding unique collared shirts is a sure way to avoid looking like "a clone."

"[Polos] are definitely popular, but a lot of guys are still not used to them because they're used to plain ones," he said. "They're definitely huge everywhere else."

Designer Sneakers

Designer sneakers like Diesel, Converse, Adidas and more are ranging this season from bright colors to everyday neutrals and whites to fit everyone's style.

For the flashier at heart, Phil Mardy, employee at Barefoot, 130 E. College Ave., said the trendy Ed Hardy designer sneakers have been selling well.

"A lot of guys have been getting colors, like purples, pinks and greens," he said.

He also said Converse All-Stars and Chuck Taylors have returned to the fashion scene, but customers are now purchasing them in brighter colors.

As for a more neutral shoe, Amy Bozylinsky, manager of Barefoot, said Diesel and Puma sneakers are popular and offered in shades of browns, grays and whites.

Well-fitting, Embellished Jeans

"I've had to buy women's jeans," said Hawk of his search for snug denim in the past. He said companies are now adapting to men's desire to wear jeans that have a closer fit to their body.

Designer denim is not just for girls; it's very much out there for men as well. Fessler said 7 for All Mankind, Buffalo and LTB are just a few designer denims offered at Industrie.

Taking into consideration the "relaxed" styles of State College, Fessler said the store offers that style for his customers, but even the relaxed styles should fit well.

"The trend everywhere is to not have your jeans so baggy you can't see what your body looks like," he said. He recommends asking store employees for help when searching for the perfect pair of jeans.

As for washes, Fessler said his recent MAGIC clothing show in Las Vegas featured lots of dark denim and gray washes, turning away from bright blue and washed out white denims.

Fessler also said holey jeans are being overtaken by embellishments that add personality to denim, including anything from stitching, rivets and detailing in the pocket area.

Super Soft Tees

Hawk said this year's T-shirts are sheerer than years past and ultra-soft.

"Everything this season is comfort and quality going way up," he said.

Fessler said he's seen lots of Prima Cotton this season -- an extremely soft, lightweight blend of cotton.

"When you brush that out, it makes it feel like a T-shirt you've had forever," he said.

These soft T-shirts are showing up with everything from plain, everyday standards to graphic tees.

Loafers and Driving Shoes

Ditch the Crocs and instead dress up a pair of khakis or jeans with this season's leather loafers and driving shoes.

Comfortable and versatile, these shoes are a must this season and perfect for taking a break from the everyday sneaker.

Bozylinsky said the tan leather Steve Madden driving shoes are selling well, along with a few other brands and varieties.

She also said Uggs makes men's loafers, which are leather on the outside and lined with soft shearling on the inside.

Layered Accessories

Take off that raggedy hemp necklace and check out this season's selection of trendy accessories.

Fessler said everything has gotten "more chunky, bigger" and layered, for example with dog tags or multiple chains.

Necklaces have also steered away from choker styles and have gotten longer, Hawk said.

As for wrist wear, leather cuffs, leather banded watches and metal cuffs are also popular this season.
