Unsure of what style choices to make during this fall's vast array of trends?
We have conveniently sifted through racks of clothing, magazines, the Web and more in an attempt to limit this season's "must-haves" down to 11 items (we couldn't pick just 10!) that are accessible to Penn State students. With a walk downtown, a drive to the Nittany Mall and a few clicks online, you can be strutting down College Avenue like it's a runway during Fashion Week.
Dark, Rich Nails
In hindsight, last year's resurgence of black nail polish may not have been the best idea. But, like any questionable trend, it's hard to let go of dark nails altogether. Luckily, this fall boasts dark, rich hues for your nails, including navy blue, plum and the always-classic deep red.
We Recommend: OPI's Russian Navy, part of its new Russian Collection, $7.50 at Trade Secret and nail salons
A Classic Blue Oxford
Conservatism prevails this fall, and the return of men's wear for women is one of the most refreshing trends so far this year. A traditional blue oxford that hits at the hip is not only versatile, but offers a great silhouette for any body type. Try one with a bit of ruffling around the collar to add a touch of feminism to this men's wear inspired piece.
We Recommend: J. Crew Suzannah shirt in navy, $78 at J. Crew (jcrew.com)
A Pair of Tailored Pumps
The shoe department did not withstand this season's modern take on men's wear. Oxford-style platforms and patent leather pumps with flirty peep toes and decorative trims are preppy yet sexy, and not for the faint of heart. In an array of blacks, heathers and charcoals and lots of patent leather, these shoes are sophisticated yet daring. To flaunt longer-looking legs, wear with a pair of trouser pants.
We Recommend: Nine West "Decors2" Pump in grey plaid, $79 at Macy's
Red Lips
Finally, women have stopped being timid by throwing away tube upon tube of shimmer lip gloss and opting for some bold-colored, old-fashioned lipstick. Fierce red lips have been spotted on many a celebrity -- including fashion frontrunner Katherine Heigl at this month's Emmy Awards -- and the classic look has finally infiltrated the mainstream.
We Recommend: Awake Stardom Full Plump Lip in Classic Red, $24 at Bath & Body Works
Sweater Vest
Keeping in check with the classic trends of this season, the knitted sweater vest has proven it's here to stay and is ideal for any wardrobe. Perfect for work, class or even thrown over a T-shirt to go shopping with friends, this former preppy staple has managed a return into our wardrobes.
We Recommend: Free People "Earth Mother" vest in heather gray, $78 at Connections, 130 S. Allen St.
Trench Coat
A good trench coat may be one of the most functional pieces in a wardrobe, and it will certainly help combat the chilling temperatures that will soon hit State College. Banded at the waist and hitting just above the knee, the trench slims and elongates the body while polishing any outfit.
We Recommend: Puff Sleeve Trench by Tulle, available in black, red and navy, $113 at www.tulle4us.com
Tights
Tights have finally won the battle against leggings this season, and for that, we are grateful.
Available in far more colors and styles (fishnets, lace and patterns), this simple article of clothing is showing up underneath minis, pencil skirts and dresses, making them a staple this fall.
We Recommend: We Love Colors' nylon/lycra solid color tights in black, $10 at welovecolors.com
A Trapeze Dress
Not intended for walking on tight ropes, this style dress is sleeveless, high-cut and slightly tapers at mid-thigh. A flattering style for all, it's a trendy way to dress up your look for class on those cooler fall days with a turtleneck or long-sleeved shirt underneath, sheer tights and boots.
We Recommend: Gap's tweed trapeze dress in black and white tweed, $49.50 at the Gap
Trouser Jeans
Although skinny and bootcut jeans are still frequenting national retail, trouser jeans are proving to be one of the fall's most popular styles. Hitting higher on the waist -- right below the belly button -- and wide leg from the knee down, try pairing them with a tucked-in or fitted shirt, boots or chunky heels.
We Recommend: Citizens of Humanity's Hutton High Rise jeans in Dark Paris, $141 at Mr. Charles, 128 E.College Ave.
A Pair of Ankle Boots
Suede and leather ankle boots have been lingering in the fashion scene since last winter, but have finally fought their way to the masses. In varieties such as distressed leather, slouched, folded-over or buckled, this chic style of boot is sure to turn up any outfit, whether it is jeans and a button down or a sweater dress.
We Recommend: Steve Madden Applegate ankle boots in brown leather, $129.95 at Barefoot, 130 E. College Ave.
A Long-Shoulder Bag
The "big bag" style is slowly morphing into a rebirth of the messenger bag and other styles that are worn across the body. Flatter, often brightly colored or metallic, sometimes in uniquely embossed patterns such as python or fabrics like tweed, these bags are not only functional but breathe fresh air into the purse industry.
We Recommend: Merona messenger bag in green, $20.69 at Target
