The night before the final day of Big Ten competition, senior Kelly Nelson said head coach John Hargis was trying to figure out if a third place victory was mathematically possible. While crunching numbers, Nelson said the team realized the battle for third place was going to be extremely close. She said they needed to race "out of their minds" in order to finish in the top three.

Penn State swimming coach John Hargis is usually quick to praise his swimmers and assistant coaches.
When asked about his own success in college at Auburn and as a gold-medal-winning member of the 1996 United States Olympic team, as he often is by his swimmers, the talkative coach becomes reserved.
