Jamestown takes two from Spikes in double dip

State College splits critical doubleheader

Two errors, 13 strikeouts and just three hits were enough to take away the State College Spikes' hopes of sweeping the three-game series.

Chambers improving as season progresses

When center fielder Evan Chambers arrived in State College, it didn't take long for him to show the Pirates organization why he was worthy of being selected in the third round of the 2009 MLB Draft.

It's Aug. 10, and the State College Spikes are in a playoff race. I'll give you a minute to re-read that.

Offense busts out in win

When Evan Chambers stepped up to the plate Thursday night at Medlar Field he had one goal --keep his swing simple.

Cox successful in late innings

When Tyler Cox walked off the field in the ninth inning Thursday night, he had done his job. The State College Spikes pitcher entered the game in the fourth inning of a tie game. He left after five-plus innings the winner in the Spikes' 9-5 win over the Aberdeen IronBirds.

Victor Black, the Pirates' 2009 second-round pick, pitches last week. Black is one of Huntington's picks currently in State College.

Pirates GM sees draftees compete

Nineteen players on the State College Spikes roster were drafted or acquired by Pittsburgh Pirates GM Neal Huntington.

Spikes bleed runs in eighth

For the second straight night, the State College Spikes barely trailed after seven innings. And for the second straight night, the Spikes self-destructed in the top of the eighth inning.

Pirates legend amuses crowd

Standing on the mound is a familiar feeling for former Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher John Candelaria. Performing in high-pressure situations is something the left hander became accustomed to while helping the Pirates win the 1979 World Series.

Errors doom Spikes

The State College Spikes' offense seems to vanish as quickly as it appears.

Carlos Silva doubles over in pain after being hit by pitch on his left hand during the Spikes loss Tuesday. Silva left the game immediately following the injury and will miss the rest of the season.

Offense comes alive in win

With a runner on first base, Justin Byler didn't waste any time expanding the Spikes 2-0 lead. When pitcher Skyler Crawford threw the first pitch to Byler, the pitcher immediately hung his head as the ball hugged the left field foul pole and left the park.

Baker, hitters thrash J-Town

Since being assigned to State College, Spikes designated hitter Aaron Baker had 104 plate appearances without his first professional home run. He needed one at-bat Monday night to end that drought.
