Penn State Icers top D-III Fredonia State

For several minutes during their game Saturday night against the Fredonia State Blue Devils, an NCAA Division III team, it appeared as if the Icers’ perfect record was in jeopardy. But thanks to three unanswered goals by the Icers and a scoreless third period for the Blue Devils, it remains intact, and the Icers emerged with a 5-4 victory.

Penn State, the top-ranked team in the ACHA, got on the board first with a goal by Justin Kirchhevel four minutes and thirty-four seconds into the game. However, Fredonia notched the equalizer 14 minutes later. They went on to score three goals during the second period while the Icers scored twice. At the conclusion of the second period, Fredonia lead Penn State 4-3.

The Icers came out strong to start the third period, and Steve Edgeworth tied the game with a power play goal one minute and four seconds into the period, and George Saad put the Icers up for good four minutes and forty-two seconds later.

Kirchhevel finished the game with two goals, while Jacob Friedman, Saad and Edgeworth each had one. Matt Madrazo recorded 26 saves and picked up the win in the net.

Penn State will take on in-state rival, Pittsburgh, tomorrow at 1p.m. at the Greenburg Ice Pavilion.
