Penn State Icers lose first game of the season to Delaware Blue Hens
The No. 1 Penn State Icers (10-1-0) lost their first game of the season, 4-3, to the No. 2 Delaware Blue Hens (15-0-1), on the road at Rust Arena.
In the first game of the weekend series, Penn State faced a challenge. After falling behind 4-2, 12 minutes into the third period, the Icers nearly mustered a comeback.
With only 20 seconds remaining defenseman Rich O’Brien scored to cut Delaware’s lead to one. Penn State last chance came when after the game had seemed to ended but 1.7 seconds was put back on the clock the after Delaware was called for icing. O’Brien seemed to have found the back of the net, but the goal came a second too late and was wiped off, giving Delaware the win.
Matt Madrazo got the loss in the net, allowing four goals on 28 shots, while Dan Meiselman, Michael Longo and O’Brien scored the goals for Penn State.
Several of Penn State’s key players did not play in Friday’s game. Forward Justin Kirchhevel and defenseman Brian Dolan were serving one-game suspensions, while Taylor Holstrom sat out with an injury. Kirchhevel leads Penn State with 22 points and Holstrom is third on the squad with 14 points.
The series will continue tomorrow night back at Penn State. The Icers will drop the puck at 8 p.m. at the Greenberg Ice Pavilion.
