Women's ice hockey team to join College Hockey America conference

Penn State's women's ice hockey team will join College Hockey America starting the first year of varsity play in 2012-13.

The announcement was made Tuesday at a press conference held at Beaver Stadium.

Penn State is the fifth team in the division right now, along with Mercyhurst, Niagara, Robert Morris and Syracuse.

"We feel that it is only going to help make not only College Hockey America better, but Penn State’s hockey program stronger," CHA president Robert DeGregorio said.

DeGregorio said Penn State will be eligible for the postseason tournament and will play each team four times -- two games at home and away.

Penn State Director of Athletics Tim Curley said joining the CHA is "one more step toward trying to put our complete program together."
