Penn State defensive matchups vs. Ohio State

Defensive line

Jordan Hill has played at a different level in the last two games. The senior defensive lineman was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for his nine-tackle performance against Iowa, and he will figure to be a handful for the middle of Ohio State's offensive line. The Lions will get tested on the edge by the speed of quarterback Braxton Miller, as this week will be the toughest test yet for their defensive ends. The Buckeyes have some playmakers on their defensive line as well. Senior John Simon leads the team with three sacks and 8.5 tackles for a loss in eight games.

Advantage: Penn State

Linebackers

As far as young linebackers go, Ryan Shazier is probably the best in the Big Ten. The sophomore has 76 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss (including two sacks), and he has forced a fumble. But Penn State still has the edge over Ohio State's linebackers in the experience department. Seniors Michael Mauti and Gerald Hodges are both Butkus Award semifinalists, and the duo has a combined 119 tackles this season.

Advantage: Penn State

Secondary

Penn State's secondary has certainly improved since week one of the season, and the unit's development is a big part of why the team has been able to force opponents off the field after third down. However, the Lions' defensive backs have yet to make an interception this season, while Ohio State leads the Big Ten in picks with 11. Senior cornerback Travis Howard has three of those interceptions.

Advantage: Ohio State
