Penn State vs. Ohio - 1st Quarter
1st Quarter
Ohio won the toss but deferred to the second half. Gerald Hodges and Adrian Amos were deep for Penn State. Hodges took the kick out to the 12 yard line. Matt McGloin and the offense got off the solid start, with several complete passes and solid runs from running back Bill Belton. Allen Robinson was McGloin's favorite target. O'Brien made a bold decision to go for it on 4th-and-1 at midfield. They converted, but a few minutes later Belton fumbled the ball on the 21-yard line and the Bobcats recovered.
Ohio introduced the Nittany Lions to their fast-paced offense. The Bobcats' first drive didn't last more the 2 minutes as Penn State forced a 3-and-out. Mauti plugged the middle on 3rd-and-1 with an impressive stop, forcing the 3-and out.
Penn State got the ball back, but was unable to take it into Ohio territory. Butterworth saw his first action of the season with a 37 yard punt.
Ohio was able to keep Penn State's defense on its heels as Tettleton and Blankenship switched up the run and the pass. Highlight of the drive was a 28yd pass from Tettleton to Blankenship out of the backfield. Ohio's offense stalled just on the brink of FG range, so they punted for a touchback.
Derek Day gets into the mix on this drive with a good 14yd run to start out. However, on his second carries, he's on the bad end of a nasty blow to the head. His helmet comes flying off mid-play, and he takes a second blow with his helmet off. Day is down for a couple minutes, but walks off the field.
Tight end Kyle Carter gets 3 looks from McGloin on the drive as PSU marches down the field. He catches 2-3 for 20 yds. Penn State notches the first points of the game with 10 seconds to go in the first quarter on a McGloin pass to Belton. PAT is good.
Score after 1st Quarter: PSU 7, Ohio 0
