Penn State Summer Depth Chart Released

Four days removed from naming a starting quarterback, Bill O'Brien released a full depth chart Tuesday. Here's a look at who's in what spot on O'Brien's first depth chart.

"OR"

There were four positions on the depth chart in which there were two players listed as starters with the word "OR" separating them.

In one of the three wide receiver positions on O'Brien's depth chart, Allen Robinson and Shawney Kersey are both listed as first-stringers. Robinson made three catches for 29 yards in 2011, his freshman season, while Kersey, who will be a redshirt junior in the fall, caught five passes for 108 yards last year.

Left guard is the only other offensive position that has two players listed in the starting spot. Mark Arcidiacono (6-foot-4, 283 pounds) is battling Miles Dieffenbach (6-foot-3, 286 pounds) for the job.

On the defensive side of the ball, Glenn Carson and Khairi Fortt will be jostling in training camp for the starting middle linebacker spot. Carson started at middle linebacker in 2011 and made 74 tackles, while Fortt recorded 33 tackles and two and a half sacks.

The last position battle is at right cornerback between Adrian Amos and Derrick Thomas. Amos originally switched positions to safety this spring, but with the recent departure of Curtis Drake from the team, Amos is now back at corner in a secondary that is lacking numbers.

Surprises

There were a few things on Penn State's depth chart that may have raised a few eyebrows.

In the secondary, Jake Fagnano is listed ahead of Stephen Obeng-Agyapong at strong safety. Fagnano played a total of 114 snaps last season and made six tackles, while Obeng-Agyapong more than doubled Fagnano's snap count by playing in 254, and made 11 tackles.

A couple other moves that come as relative surprises include Kyle Carter, a redshirt freshman who has never played a collegiate snap, ahead of Kevin Haplea -- a junior who caught three passes including a touchdown last season -- at one of the two tight end positions. Also, wide receiver Brandon Moseby-Felder, who caught four passes for 53 yards last season, is listed at fourth-string.

Offense

There are 13 positions listed on the depth chart on offense in Penn State's depth chart (five linemen, three wide receiver spots, two tight ends, quarterback, running back, and fullback).

The two tight end positions are the Y and the F. Garry Gilliam is listed as the starter at the Y position with Jesse James backing him up, and, as earlier noted, Carter is starting at the F position.

Devon Smith, who is facing marijuana possession charges, is a starter at one of the wide receiver positions. O'Brien said he is waiting for the legal process to play out before he hands down any sort of discipline to Smith.

The other two wideout spots are topped by Justin Brown and Robinson OR Kersey.

As O'Brien announced Friday, Matt McGloin is the starting quarterback, followed by Paul Jones and Rob Bolden. There are no surprises joining McGloin in the backfield as Silas Redd is again the first-string running back, with Bill Belton backing him up. Michael Zordich is the only listed fullback.

Center Miles Dieffenbach anchors the Lions up front on offense and left tackle Donovan Smith, right guard John Urschel and right tackle Adam Gress join him as starting linemen on the depth chart.

Defense

While Fagnano is ahead of Obeng-Agyapong at strong safety and Amos and Thomas battle for the right cornerback spot, Stephon Morris and Malcolm Willis are listed as the starters at left cornerback and free safety, respectively, to round out the secondary.

Michael Mauti, who missed the final nine games of the 2011 season with a torn left anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), is listed as a starter at one of the outside linebacker spots. Mauti is joined by Penn State's tackles leader in 2011, Gerald Hodges, at the other outside linebacker position.

Up front on defense, the starters are Sean Stanley at left end, Jordan Hill at left tackle, DaQuan Jones at right tackle and Pete Massaro at right end.

Special Teams

Anthony Fera will have both kicking and punting duties this season, with Sam Ficken listed as the backup kicker. Ty Howle is listed as the first-string long snapper, with McGloin doing the holding.

Amos, Belton and Devon Smith are all listed as kick returners, with Brown and Belton fielding punt returns.
