QB Bolden to start against Youngstown State
Updated: Penn State coach Joe Paterno issued this statement on Bolden:
"Based on what we have seen to this point, Bolden has a slight edge right now, but we are confident all three quarterbacks are ready to go and hope to give them an opportunity to play until we settle on the one that gives us the best chance to win."
Robert Bolden will start Penn State's season opener against Youngstown State, becoming the first true freshman quarterback to open the season as the starter in the Joe Paterno era, a source close to the team confirmed to The Daily Collegian.
As first reported by the Harrisburg Patriot-News, the true freshman Bolden will get the nod over sophomores Matt McGloin and Kevin Newsome.
The Orchard Lake, Mich., native will be the first true freshman to start a game at Penn State since Wally Richardson did so in 1992.
