Reports: Bowden to retire Tuesday

UPDATE

Bowden is now telling the Associated Press that he has not decided his future.

***
Florida State coach Bobby Bowden will retire Tuesday, several media outlets are reporting.

Bowden, who has coached the Seminoles for 34 seasons, has 388 wins and trails only Penn State's Joe Paterno (393) for the record for most wins by a college football head coach.

Florida State offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher will likely take over as the Seminoles' head coach, as he was named Bowden's successor in 2007. Penn State has no succession plan in place for when Paterno stops coaching.

Bowden won two national championships in Tallahassee -- 1993, 1999 -- and led Florida State to 10 or more wins in 14 consecutive seasons from 1987 to 2000. The Seminoles have played in a bowl game every season since 1982, which is the nation's longest active streak.

A quick breakdown of Bowden and Paterno by the numbers, as of tonight:

-Age: Paterno 82, Bowden 80
-Seasons as head coach at four-year college/university: Paterno 44, Bowden 44
-Seasons as head coach at one school: Paterno 44, Bowden 34
-Wins: Paterno 393, Bowden 388
-National Championships: Paterno 2, Bowden 2
-Undefeated seasons: Paterno 5, Bowden 1
-Conference Championships: Bowden 12 ACC, Paterno 3 Big Ten
-Head-to-head: Paterno 7, Bowden 1

Of course, 14 of Bowden's wins may be taken away, pending an academic cheating scandal at Florida State.

It is not yet clear whether Bowden will coach the Seminoles' bowl game or not.

A traditionalist, he would like nothing more than to see Joe Paterno throw it back to his Brooklyn days and install the single-wing offense this season.

While a fan of most sports, he thinks the 14 Saturdays of the college football season are the best 14 days of the year and all 34 bowl games are worth watching.
