Butler settling in nicely in Seattle

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- It was only fitting that Graham Zug had three touchdown catches Saturday.

That's because the former walk-on's career day came with another former walk-on, Deon Butler, on the Penn State sideline.

Butler, the Nittany Lions' all-time leader in receptions, decided to travel to the Big House Saturday to see Penn State's 35-10 win over Michigan since his Seattle Seahawks were on their bye week.

The NFL rookie was glad he made the trip.

"I like it man, I like it," Butler said. "They looked good. This is like textbook for how you beat a team on the road. Take the crowd out of it early. Offense scored, defense dominated. [I'm] proud of the guys, man. It's good for me to come back and see something like this."

Butler, predictably, was especially pleased with Penn State's new crop of wideouts after the departure of the "Smurfs" -- himself, Jordan Norwood and Derrick Williams, all of whom left Penn State in the top four on the school's career receptions list.

"If you asked any of us three last year, 'Was the receivers gonna be a problem?' we would have told you we've seen these guys do it in practice for a couple years now," Butler said. "It's just they were in the situation where they weren't out there on the field, so I'm glad that they're able to go out there now and prove their point and show that they're legit."

He called the decision to fly to Ann Arbor from Seattle a "no-brainer" during his team's off week, though he didn't get to see Williams, his former Lion teammate, whose Detroit Lions also had a bye week. That rendezvous will have to wait until Nov. 8, when Detroit plays at Seattle.

Until then, Butler will continue to adjust to life in the big leagues.

"Everything's going good, everything's going good," said Butler, who has been co-writing a rookie diary with the Seattle Times columnist Jerry Brewer.

"I'm playing well, not playing a whole bunch right now, but being a rookie I knew [that] coming in. We're struggling a little right now, but I'm living. I got a nice living spot, so my body feels healthy. I'm feeling good."

Even in those hideous new Seattle uniforms?

"Oh those lime green? I liked them, man," Butler laughed. "ESPN killed us, but I liked it."
