Pryor cancels Penn State visit

As most of you reading this are probably well aware, Terrelle Pryor is scheduled to visit Penn State this weekend. Well, he was scheduled to visit. That's apparently no longer the case.

Pryor, the nation's No. 1 recruit, told SI.com that he'll be headed to Michigan on Friday instead of State College.

It's probably not a total shock, given that Pryor has said in previous published reports that Penn State is off his list. But the fact that he still had a visit left open room enough for some hope among Nittany Lion fans that he'd have a last-second change of heart.

It appears that the efforts of Tom Bradley, the defensive coordinator and recruiter in Western Pa., went for naught this time. At least, it looks like that at the moment. Who knows what will happen next with this kid? He told SI.com that he just added Louisiana State to his list and had to purchase a second cell phone "because things have been so crazy."

Mallett leaves the Wolverines

Ryan Mallett, Michigan's 6-foot-7 freshman quarterback, has decided to transfer from the university and will consider enrolling at Tennessee, Texas A&M, Arkansas or UCLA, according to an Associated Press report.

Filling in for injured quarterback Chad Henne, Mallett threw for 170 yards and one interception on 16-of-29 passing in the Wolverines 14-9 win against Penn State this fall. He played with poise uncommon for a freshman and showed glimmers why many considered him one of the nation's top high school prospects last year. Losing Mallett might look good to Nittany Lion fans -- except for the fact that what Michigan loses in a pro-style passer, it might gain in Terrell Pryor a dynamic dual-threat quarterback.

Pryor, a 6-foot-6 prospect from Jeanette, Pa., has publicly expressed interest in Michigan after the hiring of coach Rich Rodriguez, whose spread offense fits Pryor nicely but likely wouldn't jibe with the less mobile Mallett.

"It just wasn't a fit and yet, it was a hard decision," Jim Mallett, the quarterback's father, told the AP. "When he came home for Christmas, he told me and my wife that he really was falling in love with being at Michigan."

The BIG One

We've all had some time to unwind after the Alamo Bowl victory and now sights refocus to the second half of the football season: recruiting.

Ah, yes, recruiting, where it's the goal of every crazed fan and curious reporter to pester 17-year-old athletes into submission and get them to spill the beans on where they have decided to ostensibly further themselves with a college education. And this year, the game is being played at a very high level.

Thanks, Terrelle Pryor.

Pryor is almost universally considered the nation's No. 1 prospect and has already been touted as a once-in-a-generation talent. Surely almost every Penn State fan -- and many others nationally -- know who this kid is by now, so I won't waste your time writing about his 6-foot-6 size and speed that has elicited Vince Young comparisons. Everyone's out to get this kid and fans have been scribbling all over Internet message boards, trying to get the latest: My cousin's friend of a friend of a friend saw wearing a navy blue sweatshirt at Denny's, so he's DEFINITELY choosing Penn State!

But an article in today's New York Times is worth giving a read if you're a Nittany Lion fan. It's the perhaps the most revelatory piece I've read about the kid and his big decision. Pryor had some interesting things to say about Penn State. Here's a little excerpt:

Although Pryor had not eliminated Penn State from consideration, he made it sound as if the Nittany Lions faced long odds. "I don't like their area," he said. "I don't like their offense either. They said they'll bring the spread with me, but I don't know."

Hmm. Draw your own conclusions from that. Also read what he has to say about the other teams on his list (Ohio State, Florida and Michigan). It certainly doesn't look good for Penn State.

You can check out Pryor in today's U.S. Army All-American Bowl, an all-star game for the nation's top high school talent. Enjoy and let the recruiting game (unfortunately) begin!
