A beautiful, sunny, photograph-ruining day

On the 27th, the sun was out, and there was not a cloud in the sky. It was a beautiful day -- about 65 degrees -- and I was miserable. The worst thing in the world when shooting sports is harsh sun light. Especially when you are confined to one sideline and the players are back lit. Its not fun. You end up with two choices. You can either meter for the background, like so: or meter for the players, as I did here: My suggestion is to expose for the players and in your raw photo options bring the exposure back down for the sky. The other thing you could do is expose for the background and then use a fill flash to expose the players, but that's almost impossible to do with action sports. - Nate

Hey everyone, this is Nathan Smith, senior photographer at The Daily Collegian -- and former Photo Editor. Just wanted to give you an update about the trip to the Rose Bowl. Below is a photo of the equipment that I took from Penn State to my house in sunny southern California. I brought 3 camera bodies, a video camera, seven lenses, one doubler, two flashes, two mono-pods, and four chargers. In order to get all this equipment across the country, I put it all in my carry-on, a "Rollie" bag and my Domke bag. With all that equipment I also had to carry my Mac Book. I chose not to check anything to avoid losing a bag or damage to the equipment.

Q&A with founder of IFoundYourCamera

Daily Collegian Photo editor Nathan A. Smith interviewed the creator of IFoundYourCamera project, Mathew Preprost. Learn how the blog got its start and take a look at the site. Where did the idea for Ifoundyourcamera come from? The project was inspired by a secret that was posted on PostSecret.blogspot.com in February 2008. The secret was printed on a photograph of a group of friends, sitting around a table. The secret read: "I found your camera at Lollapalooza this summer. I finally got the pictures eveloped and I'd love to give them to you." A few hours later, the blog was up and linked from ostSecret and received 20 orphan pictures in the first day. How many cameras/cards have been returned? We've had 12 success stories so far. It's a great accomplishment and I know that there will be even more reunions in the future. Most interesting photos you've found on a memory card? Being the travel-type, I'm always astonished by the vacation photos I see. I've received pictures from all over the world - Italy, England, Scotland, Australia to name a few - and these pictures ust have amazing scenic pictures on them. It's like I'm traveling vicariously through all these lost memory cards. How long as the site been around and how popular has it become? The blog has only been up since February of this year, so that's almost 9 months. People have been taking very well to the blog, and helping to spread the word. The blog strikes this nerve in people because there are a lot of people out there who can relate - a lot of people who have lost their cameras and photographic memories. The blog is fast approaching its 2 millionth visitor, so it''s pretty exciting. There is also a Facebook group for the project that has over 3200 members. You go to the the University of Winnipeg right? What year are you? What is your major? I'm in a joint-degree program with the University of Winnipeg and Red River College. The program is Creative Communications, which prepares students for careers in advertising, broadcast roduction, journalism or public relations. I'm pursuing a major in journalism. But one photo that I did receive was of a black and white photo of a small aircraft. The photo was found in the early 1980s in the parking lot of the Pentagon.
