Hawk surprises Collegian photographer

October 16, 2008

While walking about campus by the HUB on Wednesday I was surprised to catch the sight of a hawk, just as it was swooping shoulder high toward me across the HUB lawn. It landed in a tree just ahead of me and I was lucky enough to realize I was carrying a camera with me, so I decided to try to get some up-close shots of it. To my greater surprise, just as I placed the 200mm lens on my camera, the hawk pounced upon some rodent or such; I didn't get a chance to see what it was, just that it made a hell of lot of noise.

The hawk all but flew into me trying to catch his meal, disregarding all of the many humans about him. After being unsuccessful in its catch, the hawk flew back into the tree and then again across the lawn. This is when I was able to get my camera set up and take a few clear shots of his flight. With the HUB lawn scattered with students play various games, the hawk once again flew shoulder high and came within a few feet of students.
