The 165-pound Doc Vecchio became an All-American this past weekend at NCAA Championships in Albany, N.Y.

[ Updated Friday, March 22, 2002 ]

[ From Tuesday, March 19, 2002 ]

After 31 wins and a third-place finish at the Big Ten tournament, Doc Vecchio is finally starting to garner respect.

Its that time of year again. The NCAA wrestling tournament is set to start Thursday in Albany, NY. Penn State will send seven wrestlers to the 2002 championships, one more than the past two seasons, looking to improve on last year's performance of no All-Americans and a 25th place team finish.

[ From Thursday, March 14, 2002 ]

It's college wrestling's equivalent to a play-in game. One last shot to get to the NCAA tournament.

In late November, the Penn State wrestling team linked six wrestlers to National Letters of Intent, and now four months later, four have won state championships.

[ From Wednesday, March 13, 2002 ]

After hoping to qualify six or seven wrestlers last week before heading to Champaign, Ill., Penn State wrestling coach Troy Sunderland was pleased with his squad when seven of the 10 grabbed spots.

[ From Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002 ]

Is it possible for one team to sweep all 10 weights at this year's Big Ten wrestling championships at Illinois on March 9-10?

[ From Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002 ]

As he sits on the bench, wearing jeans and his Penn State wrestling sweatshirt, he can only watch realizing that he can’t help his team sitting on the sideline, and already thinking of his next opportunity on the mat — next year.

For Scott Moore, it was the best of times and it was the worst of times.

[ From Monday, Feb. 25, 2002 ]

The Nittany Lions (6-12, 3-4 Big Ten) fell on Saturday night to Lock Haven (17-4), at Thomas Field House, 24-14. Yesterday, Penn State dropped its final Big Ten dual meet of the season to Purdue (15-5, 4-4), 21-17, at The Bryce Jordan Center.

After going 1-7 in the Big Ten in 2001, the Penn State wrestling team has the opportunity to break even in the conference, as the season comes to a close.

[ From Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2002 ]

Beating Iowa once in a season is a huge accomplishment. Michigan has now beaten the Hawkeyes twice this season.

[ From Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2002 ]
Starting last week, when Penn State pushed Iowa to the brink, it has been a new-look Lions wrestling team. This past weekend provided a perfect example.

[ From Monday, Feb. 18, 2002 ]
Michigan State's Michael Keenan had been balancing himself on one foot for close to 20 seconds. He had thwarted off attempt after attempt from Penn State's Pat Cummins, but at last he gave in.

[ From Friday, Feb. 15, 2002 ]
The Penn State (5-9, 2-3 Big Ten) wrestling team travels to Columbus, Ohio, to take on No. 4 Ohio State (18-3, 3-2) on Saturday at noon. Then the Nittany Lions return home the following day to take on No. 20 Michigan State (4-8, 1-3) at Rec Hall at 1 p.m.

[ From Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002 ]
When a wrestler tears an anterior cruciate ligament in December, he is probably done for the season. When it happens in early February, it's almost a foregone conclusion that he is lost for the remainder of the season. Not always.

[ From Monday, Feb. 11, 2002 ]
The Nittany Lions (5-9, 2-3 Big Ten) lost a pair of dual meets to highly ranked teams this past weekend. Penn State fell to No. 5 Michigan (12-3, 3-1) on Friday night, 33-6. Yesterday, No. 2 Iowa (14-3, 4-1) trailed Penn State early but came from behind to win 24-11.

One statistic does a pretty good job of summing up the Penn State wrestling team's 33-6 loss to Michigan Friday night. Total number of takedowns: Michigan 44, Penn State 9.

[ From Friday, Feb. 8, 2002 ]
It is the kind of weekend schedule only teams in the Big Ten can truly appreciate. Michigan and Iowa, No.3 and No.2, back to back.

[ From Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002 ]
For Michigan's Otto Olson, it's now or never.

Border Brawl I, as dubbed in the Midwest, lived up to all hype in more ways than one.

[ From Monday, Feb. 4, 2002 ]
It turns out that this weekend was one in which Penn State wrestling took gambles.

[ From Friday, Feb. 1, 2002 ]
The Nittany Lions have encountered some unexpected losses that have kept them from establishing a consistent lineup. Penn State (4-6, 1-0 Big Ten) has only sent the identical lineup to the mat once all year.

[ From Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002 ]
Work ethic. Penn State wrestler Doc Vecchio certainly has it. Penn State coach Troy Sunderland sees every day in practice how hard he works.

In the past, he gave his all for the good of Penn State wrestling. Now, he's doing everything he can to beat the Nittany Lions.

[ From Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002 ]
The Penn State wrestling team suffered a major loss in its home opener despite winning 26-9 over Indiana on Sunday at Rec Hall.

[ From Monday, Jan. 28, 2002 ]
Penn State (4-6) trailed Indiana (6-5) 9-6, before the two sets of twins took to the mats, and grabbed control in the dual match Sunday at Rec Hall. The foursome of No. 10 Josh Moore, Scott Moore, Jason Woodall and James Woodall racked up 16 points en route to a victory, 26-9.

The Nittany Lions were halfway through their Big Ten opening dual meet against Indiana and a lethargic start saw them lose three of the first five bouts to fall behind the Hoosiers, 9-6.

[ From Friday, Jan. 25, 2002 ]
Two of the three unranked Big Ten teams, Penn State (3-6) and Indiana (6-4), square off on Sunday at Rec Hall. Penn State coach Troy Sunderland knows that right now is the time to perform as the Big Ten schedule begins.

[ From Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002 ]
Three years ago, while having a sub-par year, Ohio State brought in one of the top recruiting classes in the country, with the anticipation of being a powerhouse in a couple of years.

[ From Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002 ]
For decades, the Big Ten has been at the epicenter of the collegiate wrestling world, consistently racking up national championship teams and individuals, and creating a conference dynasty unparalleled in college athletics.

[ From, Jan. 15, 2002 ]
The Penn State wrestling team jumbled its lineup at the Virginia Duals this past weekend. The Nittany Lions had to do so because two starters were out of the lineup due to suspension. Penn State decided to give other wrestlers the chance to show what they can do.

[ From, Jan. 11, 2002 ]

[ From Monday, Nov. 26, 2001 ]
From the stands watching, it may have looked bad. Penn State's Mark Becks had just landed violently on his neck as his ferocious 184 pound championship at the Mat-Town Invitational came crashing towards its conclusion.

[ From Friday, Nov. 16, 2001 ]
Kyle Cathcart has done it all in high school, and he is now bound for Penn State.

The Penn State wrestling team opens their season tomorrow at the 35th annual East Stroudsburg Open. This is also first team competition since finishing 10th at the Big Ten Championships last March.

[ From Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001 ]
In order for the Penn State wrestling team to return to form as a perennial powerhouse as in the early 90's, the entire team will have to step up, especially the middleweights.

[ From Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2001 ]
For years, the power base of the Penn State wrestling lineup has been the lightweights.

At yesterday's Varsity Wrestle-Offs at Rec Hall, three of the 10 weight classes did not see any action at all, while another match was halted halfway through, and the fifth one continued without the top wrestler at the weight class.
