Johnson falls in family tradition
Penn State's football recruiting class was strong this off-season, especially with the addition of local prep star Tony Johnson.

Wilkes-Barre GAR High School running back Paul Jefferson, a 6-foot-1, 240-pound fullback, committed to the Penn State, selecting the Nittany Lions in favor of a host of other major Div. I schools, including Notre Dame, Ohio State, Syracuse, Michigan State, Northwestern and Wisconsin.

Lions to have two Gilmores
Following in the tradition of his older brother John, Wilson High School product Pete Gilmore has verbally committed to play football at Penn State. A 5-foot-11, 210-pound senior from West Lawn, Gilmore is the 13th verbal commitment Penn State has received for the recruiting class of 2000, already considered one of the best in the nation.

Recruit to add depth to PSU linebacker corps
Eleven high school juniors have made verbal commitments to Penn State thus far, including J.D. Benson, a 6-foot-4, 210-pound linebacker from Lebanon High School. Benson has had a solid career at Lebanon thus far. The linebacker made 94 tackles as a sophomore, and added 97 more stops the following year, including four sacks. That same season, Benson also picked off three passes.

Recruit could fit in well at Linebacker U
Jesse Neumyer, a 6-foot-2, 250-pound linebacker from Mechanicsburg, verbally committed June 18 to play his collegiate ball in Happy Valley, where he is expected to primarily play outside linebacker.

Lions get off to quick start in recruiting war
With 25 scholarships available for the recruiting class of 2000, Penn State has started early with eleven verbal commitments. The number and quality of recruits is one of the best in the nation.

Ohio prospect verbally commits to Penn State
Seven months before next year's National Signing Day, the Penn State football team has received a verbal commitment from one of Ohio's most highly touted prospects. Sean McHugh, a 6-foot-6-inch, 240-pound senior from Chagrin Falls, Ohio, verbally committed Saturday to come to Happy Valley, according to McHugh.

Lions get former blue-chip recruit
Former Southern California top-10 football recruit Rod Perry Jr. said yesterday he will transfer to Penn State at the conclusion of the Spring Semester.
