Penn State Football: 1999 Season Joe Paterno photo
[ Updated Wednesday, March 22, 2000 ]

Paterno optimistic about restructuring
Optimism, an open mind and a new focus were all a part of Joe Paterno's annual spring press conference yesterday, as he met with the media for the first time since making the decision to jostle his coaching staff around in early February.

Paterno shuffles staff to fill legacy
With his bowl victory becoming nothing more than a memory, Joe Paterno sat in a ballroom in his team's San Antonio hotel and laughed when asked about the vacancy left by the retirement of long-time defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky.

Alamo Bowl:
Penn State vs. Texas A&M

Rashard Casey paced the No. 13 Nittany Lions to a 24-0 win against No. 17 Texas A&M in the seventh annual Alamo Bowl.
Shutout caps Sandusky's 32-year career

Game 12: Penn State vs. Michigan State
Penn State's chances to salvage its season against Michigan State Saturday fell short. Spartans tailback T.J. Duckett's fourth-quarter touchdown run late in the fourth quarter proved to be too much for the Nittany Lions in their 35-28 loss.

Game 11: Penn State vs. Michigan
Two years ago, Michigan came into a rain-soaked, blustery Beaver Stadium and mauled Penn State, 34-8. Saturday, Michigan returned to Happy Valley with the same thing in mind.

Game 10: Penn State vs. Minnesota
The miracles ran out for the Penn State football team Saturday as it fell at the hands of Minnesota, 24-23, in the final seconds of the game at Beaver Stadium.

Game nine: Penn State vs. Illinois
In 1994, against the same team in the same stadium, Penn State needed to drive 96 yards in the final minutes of the fourth quarter to keep its national championship aspirations alive. All it needed Saturday was the third quarter to ensure a 27-7 victory against Illinois.

Game eight: Penn State vs. Purdue
In front of a sold-out crowd of 68,355, Penn State defeated Purdue, 31-25, in a game that was closer than the score represented.

Midterm grades
It's the numbers that count for the No. 2 Nittany Lions, as in seven wins and no losses.

Game seven: Penn State vs. Ohio State
Eric McCoo rushed for a career-high 211 yards and Penn State's defense stifled the Buckeyes' attack in a 23-10 victory against Ohio State in Beaver Stadium.

Game six: Penn State vs. Iowa
The result goes into the win column. That's about all the Penn State football team could say after today's 31-7 win against heavy underdog Iowa.

Game five: Penn State vs. Indiana
For the third week in a row, controversial penalties and inconsistent play daunted No. 2 Penn State, but it didn't stop them from defeating Indiana 45-24 today in Beaver Stadium.

Game four: Penn State vs. Miami
With rain splattering the Orange Bowl field during off-and-on spurts today, the events taking place on the field rivaled the turbulence of the Florida weather.

Game three:
Penn State vs. Pittsburgh

Penn State seized the opportunity to wound a bitter rival, beating Pittsburgh 20-17 Saturday at Beaver Stadium. The Nittany Lions will face their intrastate counterpart once more, in Pittsburgh next year, before the series comes to a close.

Game two: Penn State vs. Akron
For the second straight week, Penn State proved the nickname "Linebacker U" was a well-deserved title. And for the second straight week, the Nittany Lions' punishing defense took somewhat of a back seat to its flashy offense.

Game one: Penn State vs. Arizona
The Nittany Lions outroar the Wildcats behind big runs and, as expected, dominating defensive play en route to an unexpected blowout victory at Beaver Stadium.
