Two Penn State students who are accused of participating in the March 24 disturbance in Beaver Canyon were bound over on all charges yesterday at their preliminary hearings.

Students and permanent residents packed the meeting room and trickled into the hallway of the State College Municipal Building last night to offer their suggestions to the State College Borough Council on how to prevent more riots from happening downtown.

Twelve of the 20 people arrested during Saturday's early morning disturbance on Beaver Avenue were bound over on all charges during their preliminary hearings yesterday.

Members of the State College Borough Council asked students this week to tell them what can be done to curb disturbances such as the one Friday night on Beaver Avenue. One student group is working to do just that.

The 20 people arrested early Saturday morning are scheduled to have their preliminary hearings today, as police continue to search for additional suspects via footage of the disturbance in "Beaver Canyon."

In light of recent events at Penn State such as Sex Faire and last weekend's riots, President Graham Spanier addressed the University Faculty Senate concerning issues of violence and freedom of speech during yesterday's meeting.

Police used pepper spray to clear hundreds of rowdy students from an area around East Beaver Avenue early Saturday morning, arresting 20 people on charges ranging from failure to disperse to aggravated assault.
Council member 'heartsick' over riot


Local government officials and Penn State administrators commended police efforts in quelling Saturday morning's riot, but some students said they were unsure about the fairness of the measures police used.
