Coaches vs. Cancer is holding its 14th annual 5K race tonight. The race, which is a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, will take place at 6 p.m. at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. As of last night, there were about 300 registered participants, said Race Director David Suhan.
Coaches vs. Cancer is a student club at Penn State. Suhan estimated that the club raised about $10,000 for the American Cancer Society last year.
According to the official website, Coaches vs. Cancer “nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC).”
The Penn State Coaches vs. Cancer program began in 1997 and has since raised more than $1.7 million for the American Cancer Society, according to the Penn State Coaches vs. Cancer website. Funds raised by the club support the Central Region – Centre Unit office in State College.
The club hosts several fundraising events throughout the year, including the 5K and a golf tournament. In January, the club hosted its annual “Coaches vs. Cancer Suits & Sneakers “Band Together” Game and Sponsor Appreciation Day,” according to its website. For every gameday ticket sold, Penn State Athletics donated $3 to the fundraising efforts, according to gopsusports.com.
