Mr. Think Pink event raises money to fight breast cancer

Screaming women filled the lecture room as eight men paired with women in black dresses walked onto a stage decorated by light pink streamers and balloons. The 2013 Mr. Think Pink has begun.

Last night in Forum Building, Relay for Life, Zeta Tau Alpha and Pink Zone hosted the second annual Mr. Think Pink to raise money for the fight against breast cancer.

Mr. Think Pink is a beauty pageant for Penn State male students that includes everything from strutting swimwear, displaying a talent and answering questions while in formal wear.

“Its so silly… [the pageant is] a clever, fun thing,” Relay For Life Public Relations Overall Maddy Pryor said. “It’s very unique.”

The contestants included Interfraternity Council Vice President of Programming Kyle Kramer, Robe Man Sean Sweeney, OPP Captain J.J. Hue, Club Croquet player Robbie Mitchell, Lion Scout Alex Gallego, swimmer Tom Mershon, football player Shane McGregor and last year’s winner Steve Huber.

The pageant was judged by IFC Executive Vice President Lorenzo Massaro, Panhellenic President Rachel Franceschino, Mrs. THON Alyssa Wasserman, Pryor (senior- public relations and advertising) and the Nittany Lion mascot.

At the end of the event and after a few minutes of the judges deliberating in the back room, Kramer (junior-crime, law and justice) was given a purple sash and tiara and declared Mr. Think Pink.

The first contest was the swimsuit. To each pop song that played, many of the competitors stripped down to a Speedo or trunks. McGregor chose to wear a suit and referenced his attire as the regrettable bathing suit of the Titanic.

In between the acts, the judges read different fun facts of each contender that ranged from owning a black puppy to only having nine toes.

The talent show was opened by Kramer sing “I’ll Make a Man Out of You” from Mulan. With three back-up dancers dressed in white and sporting an American flag bandana, Kramer spun a broomstick and the crowd cheered.

Gallego (senior-media studies) announced to the audience that “some girl in the audience broke my heart.”

He continued to pull a woman from the stands and serenaded her while petting and smelling her hair.

Declaring that he started learning to play the guitar for the reason every 16-year-old boy does — to attract women — Mitchell played a mash up of “Wonderwall,” various hip-hop songs and country songs on his instrument.

In a 10-second performance, Sweeney stripped down to a black Speedo and shook his butt then ran off stage.

Adorned in skin-tight, light-washed jeans, Hue displayed various tricks from bouncing a golf ball on a golf club to spinning a basketball on his finger.

Mershon took the stage in a white beater, gray sweatpants and a white snapback. He started break dancing to “My Goodies.” Women started cheering and Mershon flashed his stomach.

McGregor recited a poem that was about respecting women for their minds.

Huber spoke the words of “Boyfriend” by Justin Bieber to the Nittany Lion and said after four years at Penn State, he fell in love with the Lion.

Dressed in formal attire, the competitors were interrogated on subjects from the “perfect total frat move” to celebrity crushes to a life changing experience.

Asked to be involved by ZTA, Kramer said he is honored to be crowned and thinks the event is awesome.
