Supporting gay equality does not show lack of tolerance for Christian morals

I would like to respond to Monday’s letter to the editor titled “There should be tolerance of Christian morals.” This letter stated that a previous letter supporting gay equality “shows what exactly is wrong with the world today.” So what’s wrong with the world is not genocide, racism, sexism, antisemitism, hatred of homosexuals or religious fundamentalism? It’s “catering to special interest groups such as gay rights groups?” I find this absurd.

The letter complains that supporting gay equality shows a lack of tolerance for Christian morals. I would like to make two points. First, disagreement is not lack of tolerance. Second, I reject the notion that supporting gay equality even disagrees with Christian morals. On the contrary, I believe equality and supporting the oppressed are foundations of Christianity. A Christian myself, I strongly support gay equality. To the final question from the letter, “Why should we cater to those who do not follow the Bible?” Our country is founded on the principle that we are all created equal, not just those who follow the Bible.
