Student charged with aggravated assault outside The Saloon

A Penn State student is charged with aggravated assault and disorderly conduct after being ejected from The Saloon, 101 Heister St., and causing a State College Police officer to be hurt in a pursuit, the State College Police Department said.

Matthew Nemeth, 21, of Hopatcong, N.J., was walking on chairs, pounding on tables and punching a television at The Saloon when he was asked to leave by Saloon staff at about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, police said. Staff eventually got Nemeth to the bottom of The Saloon steps when he tried to punch a staff member in the face, police said.

After getting Nemeth outside of The Saloon, he began flailing his arms when police arrived, police said. Nemeth eventually tried to run away from the police officer across the street and while in the course of the pursuit, the officer hurt his wrist, police said.

The officer was transported to Mount Nittany Medical Center for treatment, police said.
